Monty, one of our Madagascar hissing cockroaches is a bright white color- any guesses why?

As a cockroach grows, its hard outer covering cannot stretch, so it sheds the old exoskeleton. This is molting. The new exoskeleton underneath is very soft and pale white. Monty is more delicate and may hide while his body hardens.

Over the next several hours, his new exoskeleton will begin to harden and gradually darken. He may look tan or light brown before returning to his usual dark color. Most of the hardening happens within about 6 to 12 hours, but it can take up to 24 to 48 hours for his color and shell to fully return to normal. Just look at the difference in his photos, I was so glad to capture this happening.

Thank you to everyone who has purchased items from our Chewy Wish List! Seeing these packages arrive has brightened our day—and our animals are already enjoying many of the goodies!

Every donation helps provide food, treats, enrichment, and supplies for the more than 80 animals in our care. While I'm continuing chemotherapy treatments, your generosity has been one less thing to worry about.

Merry Christmas in July!

Today we're kicking off our Christmas in July fundraiser for all of the amazing animals here at Furry Scaly Friends!

This year, more than ever, your support means the world. As many of you know, I am currently undergoing chemotherapy, and while my incredible team has stepped in to help care for the animals each day, and keep our programs running, the critters' needs haven't slowed down. Every donation, every wish list item, and every share helps ensure our animals while I focus on my treatment and recovery.

We are SO excited to be part of this year’s Meriden Daffodil Festival — it’s always such an amazing day filled with family fun, and we can’t wait to see everyone there!

Come visit Furry Scaly Friends from 12:00–5:00 PM for an interactive, hands-on experience the whole family will love!

• Meet a variety of our friendly animal ambassadors
• Hands-on opportunities to touch, learn, and explore
• Special photo opportunities with some of your favorite critters

This is the perfect chance for kids (and adults!) to connect with animals in a fun, safe, and educational way — and snap some adorable photos while you’re at it!

Between the animals, face painting, characters, and all the festival fun… it’s truly a full day of memories for the whole family 🌸
