RE: Graduation Postponed to Friday, June 3rd at 6:30 pm due to Uncertainty of the Weather
Greetings, Senior families.

As you are aware, we scheduled graduation for tonight to optimize our chances to hold an exceptional outdoor event for our seniors and their families. At present, the forecast is calling for thunderstorms and rain late in the day Thursday through the evening.

Due to the uncertainty of the weather for tonight, we are cancelling graduation for Thursday, June 2nd at 6:30 pm.
SHS graduation has been rescheduled for Friday, June 3rd at 6:30 pm.
(Please refer to my earlier communication to our report and start times for the ceremony.)

Although this decision may affect plans that families have made to celebrate this special milestone in our students’ lives, please understand that our intention is to provide the best opportunity to hold graduation outside and welcome all of our families and their guests interested in celebrating the incredible accomplishments of our seniors.

Greetings Senior Families:

Pending Inclement Weather for Thursday

As we look forward to the special occasion of graduation, we want you to know that we are doing our very best to ensure a tremendous experience for our students, families, and friends.

Obviously, we would prefer that the weather cooperates, that we can hold graduation outside, and that we can welcome all of our community members interested in celebrating the incredible accomplishments of our seniors.

We scheduled graduation this Thursday evening to optimize our chances for an exceptional outdoor event. At present, the forecast is calling for thunderstorms and rain late in the day Thursday through the evening.

Therefore, we will make an announcement on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. to notify you if the graduation will be held on Thursday, June 2 or moved to Friday, June 3.

Although we realize any decision comes with potential risk (as no one can control the weather), please understand that our rationale and intentions are only to provide our seniors the very best!

Graduation Practice for Students

Seniors are meeting tomorrow morning in the cafeteria for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. When you arrive, please see Ms. Scelfo and Mr. Simek for an index card with information you will need for the ceremony. We will move into the gym at 8:00 a.m. to begin our practice. You must be in attendance to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.

The weather is a concern for Thursday. If it is not raining on Thursday morning, we will meet on the field. Please report directly to your seat (same as inside and printed on your index card) by 8:00 a.m. If it is raining, please report to your seat in the Blue Gym by 8:00 a.m. Again, you must be in attendance to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.

Tickets for Graduation

We will distribute tickets on Thursday after practice. If the ceremony is outside, anyone attending the ceremony must have a Blue, Yellow, or White wristband (ticket) to enter Cougar Stadium. If the ceremony is inside, anyone entering the building must have a Blue or Yellow wristband.

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Seniors,

Date and Time: Commencement is scheduled for Thursday, June 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Cougar Stadium. The rain date is Friday, June 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Cougar Stadium. If the weather does not cooperate, we will move indoors to our Blue Gym on Friday, June 3rd. Graduating seniors are asked to arrive between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Dress Code: The dress code for the ceremony is dress pants, dress shirt, tie, dress shoes or dress, skirt/blouse, dress shoes/sandals. We request students do not wear flip flops, do not bring cell phones, or bring items such as handbags, purses, and back packs. These items will need to be left in the Blue Gym during the ceremony and will be unsupervised.

Cap and Gown Pick Up: Students are picking up their Cap and Gown on Wednesday, June 1st after commencement ceremony practice.

Post Commencement: The SHS Home and School and junior parent volunteers are organizing food for after the ceremony, and fireworks are planned for the evening. The tradition at SHS is for junior families to organize the post commencement food before the fireworks. In previous years, the SHS Home and School Association collected money for the post commencement food from a fee on the ticket for the post prom party. We did not add the fee this year. Instead, we are asking each senior family to donate $10 for the post commencement food. The money has been added as a fee in Home Access Center. You can pay online or send in a check (made out to Springfield High School) to the main office. Our goal is for everyone to make this payment no later than Friday, May 20th.

Tickets: Each family is going to receive eight tickets for the commencement ceremony. Guests must have a ticket to enter the stadium. If we must move the ceremony indoors on Friday, June 3rd, the five blue tickets will be for the Blue Gym or Gold Gym. The two yellow tickets will be able to view the ceremony live streamed in the cafeteria or auditorium. The one white ticket is only for the outdoor ceremony. Tickets will be distributed after commencement ceremony practice on Thursday, June 2nd.

To receive your tickets and participate in commencement, you must:

attend both Wednesday and Thursday morning practices
return all textbooks
settle financial obligations
Seating at Stadium: The gates to the stadium will open at 5:15 p.m. for our guests. All guests must have a ticket to enter the stadium. Seating is available in both the home and visitor side. Handicapped seating in bleachers is limited. Seating on the track will be provided for handicapped guest and one other person.

Parking: Parking for the commencement ceremony will be available in the gravel lot, the front lot, the student parking lot, and on Rolling Rd and Leamy Ave. We recommend carpooling. Parking in the back lot is reserved for staff.

Chaperones and helpers needed for Post Prom! We need: folks to help decorate, chaperones, and casino dealers. You don't need to be a senior parent to help (Junior parents -- this is a perfect opportunity to see what's coming your way next year) and we CANNOT make this a successful event without the help of parent volunteers!
