Cowgirl Soccer Shows Grit and Growth in Season-Opening Weekend

The Crook County Cowgirls opened their 2026 pre-season slate this past weekend in Bend, laying a strong foundation for what promises to be an exciting building year for the program.

Friday’s opener against La Grande High School proved to be a tough learning experience for the young Cowgirl squad. Crook County dictated the tempo early, maintaining long spells of possession and spending the majority of the first half pushing the attack into La Grande’s defensive third. However, during an unpressured build-up out of the back, an offensive passing miscue in the defensive third was intercepted, allowing La Grande to capitalize against the run of play on a 1-on-1 chance. The goal dealt a heavy emotional blow to the Cowgirls, and despite controlling possession again in the second half, another error led to a second La Grande goal. The early-season mental fatigue set in, leaving the Cowgirls on the wrong end of a frustrating 2-0 decision in a match they felt was well within their reach.

Rather than letting Friday's setback define them, the Cowgirls responded on Saturday morning with a soaring performance against Philomath—a perennial 4A powerhouse ranked among the top teams in the state and featuring premier, state-recognized talent.

Facing top-tier competition, Crook County played with incredible passion, heart, and tactical precision. The Cowgirls matched Philomath’s physical intensity and controlled quality stretches of possession, stringing together brilliant multi-pass combinations into the attack. While the final scoreline favored Philomath 2-0, the numbers on the board hardly reflected the competitive flow of the match, drawing praise even from match officials who noted it was the highest level of soccer they had seen Crook County play.

"Friday was a tough lesson in maintaining our mental resilience, but the way our girls dusted themselves off and came out on Saturday showed true Cowgirl grit," said Head Coach Mary Buell. "To control possession and create dangerous chances against a top program like Philomath shows exactly what this group is capable of when we play with confidence. Saturday proved we can compete with the top 4A teams and be real contenders in 5A. We have a few details to fine-tune, but our excitement for this young group is through the roof. We are going to be a force this season."

Crook County now turns its focus to practice next week as they refine their ex*****on ahead of the regular season.

Cowgirl Soccer Shows Growth, Grit, and Heart at Gresham Jamboree! ⚽️💛💙

The Cowgirls kicked off the season at the Gresham Jamboree with an impressive performance across two 30-minute contests!

With over half our roster new to varsity and 40%+ underclassmen, we are anchored by our Ohana manifesto—a family-first, winning mindset built on Attitude, Commitment, Effort, and Heart.

Match 1: Cowgirls 1, Gresham 0
The girls took control against 6A Gresham, possessing over half the game and stringing together fluid 5+ pass combinations. Defensively, we held Gresham to ZERO shots on goal. Junior Cassie launched a great strike, and sophomore Jackie finished the rebound for the game-winner! 🎯

Match 2: Cowgirls 0, Centennial 0
On a quick 30-minute break, we faced a physical 5A Centennial squad. In a gritty mid-block battle, the match was very even in possession, but Cowgirls dominated 50/50 aerial duels and outshot Centennial 3-to-1 to earn a shutout draw! 🔒

These games proved our hard work is paying off as we refine our game for conference play.

Next Up: Oregon Showcase Tournament next weekend vs. La Grande and Philomath! 🚌💨

So proud of this team! 🌵⚽️

This winter, join us for CC Winter Futsal at the CCMS Gym, an open gym opportunity designed for female athletes to build community and keep their skills sharp. The sessions take place every Sunday at 3:00 PM, running through January and February for both middle and high school students, and continuing through March and April for middle schoolers only.

These sessions are for supervised open play only—no formal instruction will be provided—though coaches will be there to play along. To help you stay sharp, ball mastery and fitness packets will be available for athletes to track their individual growth throughout the off-season.
