Holler: Contemporary Appalachian Art Gallery Holler showcases the work of contemporary Appalachian artists. Appalachia has a unique, beautiful culture.

Often, in the media, a singular narrative about the Appalachian region and its people is presented. Increasingly, over the last 100 years, this singular, often derogatory, viewpoint has become the default understanding by outsiders. This narrative often focuses on negativities and hardships faced by the region rather than uplifting and celebrating the deep, complex, and rich history & culture of t

he Appalachian region. As one of the oldest and most impactful cultures in American history, it is integral to understanding the larger fabric and evolution of the United States. Holler treats Appalachian culture with dignity and respect and encourages others to do so as well. It is an inclusive cultural hub, presenting the artwork of traditional Appalachian voices as well as the work and viewpoints of Appalachians who have been previously underrepresented or marginalized. Its mission is to present a full, broad understanding of what makes the region unique and complex through visual art exhibitions, classes, workshops, and cultural events. Holler shows and sells the work of Appalachian artists in multiple genres, from traditional folk craft (such as pottery, quilting, and glasswork) to contemporary visions of the region. Contemporary art includes painting, sculpture, installation, video work & film, performance, and experimental media.

Today, RiffRaff cofounder Lori is in Memphis, TN at the South & Appalachian Creative Placemaking Summit, sharing the RiffRaff journey...20+ years of building, learning, and evolving right here on Mercer Street.

Through our Create Your State practice, we’ve been documenting and sharing what we’re learning as we go: what works, what doesn’t, and how creative work can move from activating abandoned spaces… into something deeper as the work takes root.

We’re honored to share this work with communities across the region who are building in their own places, in their own ways.

And we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: learning in real time, and sharing it as we go. 💛
