While the classics are having their moment right now, let’s hear about Amanda Gregory’s post-AP Latin classroom: Five students are doing something unique, writing their own scholarly reader for Seneca’s De Clementia, a dense treatise written for the emperor Nero.
When no student-friendly guide existed for this text, they built it. Complete with vocab, grammar notes, historical context, and literary analysis through a rotating, collaborative process where everyone edits each other’s work.
“It’s collaborative, it’s messy, and it takes time,” Gregory says. That’s the point.
The student-written reader publishes this fall through open-access press Pixalia.
