The Council on Science and Technology fosters education, research, and intellectual exchange that deepen and broaden understanding, experience, and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Join us October 6th for the Princeton University 2026 Fall Evnin Lecture, featuring a screening of Nature | PBS's 'Humanlike: The Chimps of Fongoli'. A panel discussion will follow with Shane Campbell-Staton, Associate Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Jill Pruetz, Professor, Anthropology, Texas State University; and Fongoli field guide Dondo (Johnny) Kanté, and moderated by CST's Craig Marshall, Assistant Director, STEM Education. 'Humanlike: The Chimps of Fongoli' offers a fascinating look at the chimpanzees of Fongoli and how they have adapted, survived, and thrived in the harsh savanna of Senegal.

Last week, the University CST hosted STEM & Beyond: Charting an Interdisciplinary Journey, bringing together students and scholars whose work bridges STEM with the humanities, arts, and public policy. The panel featured faculty Elena Torok (Conservation Science / Fine Art) and Jane Cox (Theater / Technology), along with assistant professor Sebastian Murgueitio Ramirez (Philosophy / Physics) and graduate student Sasha Bodrova (Engineering / Policy). Panelists shared stories of their own interdisciplinary journeys, explored how approaches from one field can spark new possibilities in another, and offered candid reflections on navigating unconventional academic and career paths. Students connected with panelists in small groups to exchange ideas and seek advice about their own interests and aspirations. The lively discussion underscored the enthusiasm among students for exploring possibilities beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Eighteen of Princeton University’s STEM doctoral students and postdocs participated in the sixth annual Lab Tales Science Storytelling Workshop in August. Participants learned how to use narrative techniques, historical stories, and perspective-taking skills to communicate their research to diverse audiences and serve as effective ambassadors for science. The program is led by Professor Daniel Cohen (MAE) and faculty and staff from the CST and GradFutures. Keep an eye out for upcoming talks by Lab Tales alums!

Translational Science Career Exploration Outing

The CST partnered with NJ ACTS and Made Scientific, a cell therapy contract development and manufacturing organization, on a workforce training program for Princeton undergraduate and graduate students in various departments conducting bioscience research. Over the course of the workshop, students toured a cell therapy manufacturing facility and engaged with the regulatory, quality, and production frameworks that shape how scientific discoveries become clinical products. The experience offered students an opportunity to see their academic coursework and lab research applied to better understand how a promising result at the bench is translated to a therapy that reaches patients.

CST's Assistant Director Vivian Feng and Associate Director Penelope Georges led more than 50 undergraduate researchers from the Omenn–Darling Bioengineering Institute's BE-Sure program and the Princeton Center for Complex Materials REU in a Scientific Research Poster Workshop, helping students turn their summer research into a clear, visually effective story. The workshop covered the key components of science communication, from crafting a hook to landing on a memorable takeaway. Students put the principles to work, analyzing example posters before starting to draft their own. We look forward to seeing these posters take shape as students wrap up their summer research!

The CST Assistant Directors, Erin Flowers and Vivian Feng, led students from the Summer Research Village in a professional development workshop titled "Crafting Beautiful and Informative Data Visualizations" to help them turn data into compelling stories. The workshop covered the fundamentals of effective data visualization, including best design practices, storytelling with data, and the dos and don'ts of creating impactful graphics. Students also put these ideas into practice by building visualizations from fun datasets in teams, sharing their work, and leading peer critiques on what makes a visualization effective. We can't wait to see these skills in use in their final research presentations!

Congratulations to Jessica Wang '26 (EEB), who is the recipient of the 2026 Gregory T. Pope Prize for Science Writing for her piece, “House Guests.” Cassie Stoddard, CST Director, and Craig Marshall, CST Assistant Director, presented the award during EEB’s Class Day Ceremony. The Pope Prize is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has shown a keen interest in science and demonstrated an outstanding ability to communicate that enthusiasm to a wide audience through journalism. Congratulations, Jessica!

The CST hosted Elizabeth Margulis, Professor of Music and Acting Chair of the Music Department, during Reunions, to share her new book “Transported: The Everyday Magic of Musical Daydreams”. Professor Margulis’ talk explored the science of how music sends us somewhere else, into a personal memory or vividly imagined scene. The lively session was followed by a reception and book signing. Congratulations to Professor Margulis on her newest book!
