Reminder Saturday starts our mini session of Garden Smarter lectures. We have only 3 talks this fall. We will be talking about soft landing gardens (support insects, birds and other wildlife). Hope to see you Saturday!

Do you want to support insects, birds and other wildlife in your garden? This presentation will describe how to do that with a soft landing garden. Learn what these are, why they are important and how to establish one. This event will be hosted by Master Gardeners at Calvert Library Prince Frederick on Saturday, Aug 29, 10-11am. Maryland wildlife hopes that you will be able to attend!

If you harvest and seeds this fall or have any packaged seeds that are still viable and you are willing to donate, the Calvert County Master Gardeners welcome your donations as we prepare for our annual seed swap. Please drop your seeds off in the blue bucket at the extension office (30 Duke Street in Prince Frederick.) Thanks so much and be on the lookout for the announcement of our seed swap in January!

Give us shout out if we saw you today at JPPM Children’s Day on the Farm! It was a hot day but there was a breeze. Thanks to Lisa Rodriguez for coordinating our Master Gardener Table and for all Master Gardeners who manned the table and donated plants.

Our own Calvert County Master Gardeners got together last Saturday for some fun with plants! Thanks to everyone who came out and participated!

Spring harvest of cool weather crops like lettuce and strawberries and early pruning of cucumbers as well as removing cucumber flowers to let the plants grow stronger was completed. Some architectural skills such as working with invasive bamboo to make a support structure for beans was also needed by our good volunteers.

What is your favorite Native Plant to grow??

This is a great resource for our region to learn more about our native plants, where to plant them, sun exposure and moisture control.

One of the easiest ways for us to reduce our pollution contribution to the Chesapeake Bay is to replace some of our lawn and typical landscapes with native plants. Native plants have occurred in our region for hundreds of years and are accustomed to local sun, soil, and climate.
