August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. She was taken up into heaven body and soul.
There are two sets of readings, one for a vigil Mass and the other for Mass on the day. The first reading for the vigil is the story of King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant up into the city of Jerusalem. The Ark was built while the people were camped at Mount Sinai, and it contained the two tablets of the Torah, the staff of Aaron, and a jar of manna. It was kept in the Tent of Meeting throughout the journey in the desert, God dwelling in the midst of his people. When they arrived to the promised land, it resided mostly at the sanctuary in Shiloh for a few centuries. It was lost in battle to the Philistines, but miraculously recovered. For a long time David was afraid to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, saying, “How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?” (2 Sam 6:9).
In the Gospel of the day, we hear Elizabeth greeting Mary with almost the same words: “How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk 1:43). Mary is the Ark of the Covenant. She is the tabernacle which carries the presence of the Lord, dwelling in the midst of his people. Hers is the womb that bears Emmanuel, God-with-us.
And in the first reading of the day, “God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple” (Rev 11:19). This is what we celebrate on the great feast of the Assumption. Mary, the Ark of the Covenant, has finally been taken up, body and soul, into the heavenly Jerusalem.

El 15 de agosto se celebra la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María al cielo. Ella fue elevada al cielo en cuerpo y alma.
Hay lecturas para la Misa de vigilia, y otras para la Misa del día. La primera lectura de la vigilia narra cómo el rey David llevó el Arca de la Alianza a la ciudad de Jerusalén. El Arca fue construida mientras el pueblo acampaba en el monte Sinaí y contenía las dos tablas de la Torá, el bastón de Aarón, y una vasija con maná. Residía en la Tienda de Reunión durante la travesía por el desierto, la presencia de Dios en medio de su pueblo. Al llegar a la Tierra Prometida, permaneció durante varios siglos principalmente en el santuario en Siló. Fue capturada por los filisteos en batalla, pero recuperada milagrosamente. Durante mucho tiempo, David temió llevar el Arca a Jerusalén, preguntándose: «¿Cómo va a venir a mí el arca del Señor?» (2 Sam 6, 9).
En el Evangelio del día, escuchamos a Isabel saludar a María con casi las mismas palabras: «¿Cómo es que la madre del Señor viene a mí?» (Lc 1, 43). María es el Arca de la Alianza. Ella es el tabernáculo que contiene la presencia del Señor, quien habita en medio de su pueblo. Su seno es el que lleva a Emmanuel, Dios-con-nosotros.
Y en la primera lectura del día se dice: «Se abrió el templo de Dios en el cielo y dentro de él se vio el arca de la alianza» (Ap 11, 19). Esto es lo que celebramos en la gran fiesta de la Asunción. María, el Arca de la Alianza, finalmente ha sido elevada, en cuerpo y alma, a la Jerusalén celestial.
