4-H Youth Development

The 4-H/Youth Development program creates opportunities and supportive environments for youth and adults to become capable, competent and caring citizens. The emphasis is on "hands-on" learning that focuses on the youth's area of interest. Programs are conducted with the help of parents, adult volunteer leaders and professional staff who organize educational experiences. You

Agriculture & Natural Resources

What comes to mind when you think of Agriculture in the Mountains? Many people immediately form images in their minds of working long hours in small garden plots filled with vegetables ready for canning. Some would recall taking fresh picked apples to market on a crisp September morning. Others may think of the old hayloft where the many bales of hay were “put up” during the hot summer months in preparation for the long winter ahead. Still others would recall memories of tobacco patches and cornfields. No matter what you think of when you recall you favorite memory, most would agree that agriculture has played an important role in Floyd County ’s past and will continue to play a large role in our future. Community & Economic Development

The Community and Economic Development program helps communities resolve locally determined problems with objective information and educational assistance. The program also develops community leadership potential and assists communities determine long-range programs of action on such issues as economic development, community services, community planning and visioning, land use, and community resource management. Family & Consumer Sciences

The goal of the Family & Consumer Sciences Program is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. We address the challenges of critical issues affecting people's daily lives in a changing environment. Programs focus on economic, social and physical well-being of our clients. We strengthen personal and family relationships, encourage healthful choices, and identify resources to extend income. Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is administered by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and target low income families and individuals with nutrition education. The goal of this program is to educate limited resource families with young children and Food Stamp clientele to plan nutritious meals on a limited budget, acquire safe food handling practices, improve food preparation skills and change behavior necessary to have a healthy lifestyle.

This week on From the Woods Today, learn how Kentucky wood products producers and landowners can benefit from the latest training and technical assistance available through the University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources Extension. Join us as Chad Niman, Forest Products Specialist, covers recent support on a custom solar wood drying kiln project with a Kentucky landowner and also learn available resources in kiln drying support.

Also on tap: Laurie Thomas, University of Kentucky Department of Forestry and Natural Resources - Extension, returns with another Tree of the Week segment featuring winged elm. Found throughout much of Kentucky, winged elm is a medium-sized native hardwood known for the distinctive corky "wings" that develop along its twigs. Laurie will explore the tree's unique characteristics, ecological importance, wildlife value, and how to identify this species in Kentucky's forests.

Discover the many benefits and uses of biochar, a stable, carbon-rich material produced by heating organic matter in a low-oxygen environment. Join Dr. Manisha Parajuli of Kentucky State University's School of Agriculture & Natural Resources as she explains what biochar is, its many applications, the feedstocks used to produce it, and common production methods.

Kentucky has an abundant supply of materials that can be converted into biochar, including invasive species such as Callery pear. Lori Bell, owner of Blue Turtle Permaculture, LLC and a 2025 graduate of the Kentucky Master Naturalist Program, shares her experience and provides a step-by-step look at creating biochar using a custom-built Kon-Tiki style kiln.

Also on tap: Dr. Ellen Crocker with the University of Kentucky Department of Forestry and Natural Resources - Extension, discusses laurel wilt, a destructive tree disease spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle that threatens members of the laurel family. 💙What a BUSY week for the Floyd County Homemakers!💙

Floyd County Homemakers have been on the move this week, celebrating accomplishments, learning new things, and continuing to grow as leaders in our communities!

We kicked off the week with our Annual Meeting, where awards were presented and we took time to celebrate another wonderful year of accomplishments, service, friendship, and dedication. We also had SIXTEEN county blue ribbon winners! 🥇

Next was Leader Lesson Day, giving our leaders the opportunity to learn the yearly Homemaker Lessons and bring the information back to their clubs.

And to wrap up an already busy week, our members traveled to Boyd County for Leadership Toolbox. They spent the day learning, connecting, and gaining new tools to help strengthen our Homemaker leadership and clubs.

It’s been a FULL week, but such a rewarding one! We are incredibly proud of our Floyd County Homemakers and thankful for the time, dedication, and heart they continue to pour into the organization and our community.

Here’s to another great year of learning, leading, serving, and growing together! 🌟
