CHAT GPT AND WRITING INSTRUCTION—Part 1: Teaching Rhetorical Analysis in the Age of AI

How I turned ChatGPT into a powerful rhetorical analysis lesson for my first-year college comp students.

Instead of banning AI, I made it the subject of inquiry. Students analyzed media responses to ChatGPT, evaluated real arguments, and grappled with deep questions about authorship, critical thinking, and academic integrity.

🧠 Learn:
• How to teach rhetorical analysis through AI
• Why students are ready for these conversations
• How to keep writing instruction relevant in the age of AI

Watch Part 1 of my YouTube series here—and hopefully get inspired to reframe AI less as a threat, and more as a teachable moment.

Why Writing Is the #1 Skill Linked to Student Success—No Matter Your Major āœļøšŸŽ“

Think writing only matters in English class? Think again.

1ļøāƒ£ It’s the #1 academic skill linked to college success—across all majors.

ļæ½2ļøāƒ£ It’s one of the top qualities employers look for when hiring college grads.

But why? Because good writing shows that you can:

• Research and synthesize complex ideas

• Think critically and creatively

• Communicate clearly and persuasively

šŸ’” Writing isn’t just a school assignment. It’s a life skill—for education, the workplace, and civic life.

Watch this quick video to learn more about why writing is a tool of empowerment, not just a task to complete.

Why Are So Many Students Not Ready for College-Level Writing? šŸŽ“āœļø

It’s not about blame—definitely not on high school teachers. Instead, it’s about a big communication gap between how writing is taught in high school vs. college.

šŸ‘‰ In high school, students mostly write short answers and formulaic essays like the five-paragraph essay. They rarely get to choose topics that truly matter to them or dive into multi-page research papers.

šŸ‘‰ In college, students are immediately expected to research, find their own voice, and write deeply on topics they care about—no formulas, just authentic academic writing.

Why this mis-alignment?

• High schools must cover lots of state standards quickly.

• Testing focuses on timed writing exercises, prepping students for accountability tests—not authentic writing.

• The philosophy of teaching writing shifts from cognitive skills in high school to a sociocultural approach in college, where students’ identities and cultures play a big role.

This gap explains a lot about why students feel unprepared when they enter college.
