A long time prescott Prescott College instructor and friend of Treehouse has a new book!

Join us for an evening with Thomas Fleischner, celebrating their latest book, Astonished by Beauty: A Field Guide to the Practice of Paying Attention. The event will begin at 6:00 PM with a reading, followed by a Q&A and book signing at 7:00 PM.

About the Book: An invitation to slow down and experience the world through the mindful practice of natural history.

What happens when we truly pay attention to the natural world? Astonished by Beauty offers a thoughtful and practical guide to reconnecting with nature through the practice of natural history. Through a series of brief, intimate stories from the Alaskan Arctic to the Amazon, Fleischner reveals how both easy and meaningful it is to deepen our connection with the land and its creatures. Readers are invited to learn how to look closely, see clearly, and feel deeply the living world around them, while recognizing the vital link between our well-being and the health of the Earth. Offering simple, grounded steps to nurture this bond, the book is part reflection, part guide, calling for a life lived with care, presence, and respect for the wild beauty that surrounds us.

About the Author: Thomas Lowe Fleischner, a naturalist and conservation biologist, is a leading voice advocating for the importance and rejuvenation of natural history. He is the author of numerous articles and professional papers, and author or editor of four books, including The Way of Natural History, and Nature, Love, Medicine: Essays On Wildness and Wellness. He was the founding director of the Natural History Institute, Faculty Emeritus at Prescott College, and elected Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. He has served as Chair of the Natural History Section of the Ecological Society of America, on the Board of Governors of the Society for Conservation Biology, and as President of its Colorado Plateau Chapter. Recently, he has led and coordinated efforts to recognize the high biodiversity values of the Mogollon Highlands Ecoregion of the American Southwest. He lives in Prescott, Arizona.

presents original work from professional artists addressing social issues. This June NYC based artists mayfield brooks and camilo camar present the Whale Fall dArK oXyGen dance project with a Bessie award winning film “Whale Fall”, a dance liberation workshop, “Subtle Pleasure, Open Heart” and the performance “dArK oXyGen”.

Engaging themes of ancestral liberation, inter-species care, and environmental mystery mayfield brooks (NYC) and camilo camar (Colombia) are inspired by ocean cosmologies from the global south. dArK oXyGen plays with the possibility that entering darkness is a generative process. It is an exorcism of the machines that mine our minds, the machines that disconnect us from the depths of our own psyches, and how that disconnection might be connected to the machines that mine our deep sea ocean ecosystems. Through this work we call attention to the movement to permanently ban deep sea mining. We hope that our creative work can urge deeper introspection into how to care for ocean ecosystems under threat. The public is invited into the space as active participants in a dance installation that conjures breath and breathlessness as spiritual and eco-conscious awakening. Can we catch our breath and catch the spirit collectively in these trying times? Movement into shadows that speak and ghosts that dance fill the air. What happens when the ocean whispers our ancestors’ names? ⁠Are we listening? Can we join together in a cacophony to exorcise the sounds of machines that mine our minds and extract from our oceans? The ocean is the lung of the earth. What would happen if the ocean couldn’t breathe?
