See if this sounds familiar—rather than regarding writing as a KEY foundational skill, most students consider the task of composing an academic essay a huuuge drag. (Maybe plenty of educators do too, ha—but no worries, we've got you covered!)
Developing top-notch writing skills actually represents a powerful—even, egads, enjoyable!—opportunity for students. Why? Because colleges & employers LOVE great writing. They recognize that people who can write/think/communicate well possess a constellation of high-level competencies that apply across many subject areas & types of projects.
Employers consistently cite writing ability as one of the most sought after—but least found—skills in their new hires. A young person who has mastered academic writing, and cultivated the corresponding habits of mind, has a clear advantage influencing the direction of their own college, career, and civic life.
My husband, Bill, used to be the Director of Writing Assessments at ACT, the company that produces the ACT college admissions exam. What he observed in his nearly ten years there was that not very many juniors & seniors were capable writers. Though the ACT test-takers were in the process of preparing for college, they were far from ready to write at the college level. (Note: This wasn't the teachers' fault, nor the students'...the problem is complex, but frankly, Bill's studied the &%@! out of it at this point and knows of what he speaks!)
His verdict: Any REAL solution begins with erasing the crippling disadvantage faced by students who lack writing competence entering college. (The stats on this are pretty stark; I'll cover those in some future posts.)
Writing doesn't have to JUST be torture 😜 —it can be fun, and a genuine game-changer too.

Our new (free) newsletter, 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦, has launched! Ever since Walker was born—he's currently 19 months—Bill has been mulling how to best educate a kid today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For most of Walker's life so far, he has been stuck at home with the two of us because of the pandemic. He's beginning his education at a time when conventional schooling has been turned on its head. God willing, COVID-19 will be long gone by the time Walker is school age. But we wonder what lies ahead for him. Will education return to normal after this? Should it?⠀⠀⠀
