Our Responsibility: It’s Time to Take Action

Many of our legislators don’t care about our public schools. They throw us a few crumbs and pretend to help, but behind the scenes, they’re making it worse. They’re forcing public schools to tax more, only to divert those funds into private school “vouchers.” At the same time, revenue limits are suffocating us—restricting the funds we need to give our kids the education they deserve.

The state’s priorities are clear: they’d rather funnel money away from public schools and force our public school tax dollars to pay for private institutions. Now that this has become practice, they want you all to believe all of our state’s public schools are failing. Why should we fund them more?

This isn’t just about money—it’s about Prentice’s future. If we don’t act now, our schools will keep spiraling downward—fewer teachers, fewer programs, fewer opportunities. And the state? They will do nothing. They haven’t for years.

Many of our legislators don’t care. They’d rather watch small towns crumble than lift a finger to help. But we’re not going to let that happen. We’re fighting back, and we won’t stop until our schools have the support they need.

Vote yes for the Prentice School Referendum. Voting yes on the referendum isn’t optional; it’s our responsibility. If the state won’t do its job, we will.

We won’t let our kids be abandoned by a system that doesn’t care.—We’re taking control of our future.

1. State Aid Increases Don't Solve the Funding Issue: Governor Evers’ plan may give schools more money, but they are still limited by a 30+ year-old funding formula that leaves schools underfunded and forces them to rely on referendums for basic needs.

2. Property Tax Relief Comes at a Cost: While property taxes might go down, this plan doesn't truly increase funding for schools – it just shifts the burden to the state while schools remain in the same financial struggle.

3. A Temporary Fix, Not Real Reform: The proposal offers a short-term property tax break but doesn't address the root cause of school underfunding. To truly improve education, we need real funding reform that lifts outdated caps and ensures schools are properly supported.

Without the support of communities like ours, schools across the state would not be able to provide a quality education.

Calling for a significant investment in kids from preschool to college, Gov. Tony Evers proposed a budget Tuesday that would invest heavily in education, increasing overall state spending by billions of dollars in the process.

A statement written by an educator in Indiana:

“Years ago, education took a dramatic turn for the worse. We began to be dictated by politicians instead of experienced educators. As a teacher with 42 years in the classroom, I am continually horrified by the decisions made by our legislature regarding the education of our students. No teacher wants these changes. We have become one of the lowest-ranked states in the nation in education, and it’s not because of the teachers—it’s because of the decisions made by politicians who are not trained in any form of education.

This would be like asking me to perform brain surgery. Sure, I’ve been to the hospital before, but I’m not licensed to operate on anyone’s brain. The same goes for these politicians making decisions about our schools—they lack the qualifications to make these choices.

When you look at how education worked years ago and how well students were performing compared to now, it’s clear that the problems aren’t because of the teachers. It’s because of the politicians. I didn’t vote for many of them, but perhaps you did. As I near retirement, the future of our children’s education will soon be in your hands. What are you going to do about it?”

Dont be fooled by “School Choice”

School choice isn't what it might seem—it's already a reality. If you want to send your child to a school outside your district, you have the option to do so. It wasn’t always this way, and for some families, it represents a crucial lifeline. But that choice will come with a heartbreaking cost if lawmakers get their way—because beneath the surface, something is deeply wrong.

Our schools are struggling. Struggling in ways no child should. The funding simply isn’t there. The state, which is supposed to invest in our children's future, has left them in the dust. Teachers, who pour their hearts into their work, are being lost. Vital programs, the ones that inspire and nurture our kids, are being reduced. Resources that should be a given are slipping through their fingers. And it's the children who bear the brunt of it all. They deserve better.

The current superintendent at the Department of Public Instruction says we should lower standards so every child can be a high achiever. But that's not the answer. Lowering standards isn't a solution—it’s a surrender. It’s saying that it’s okay for our kids to settle for less, that their dreams are worth less. And when another side steps in, pushing for school choice under the guise of a cure, they don't see the truth. Yes, parents should have options. But forcing tax dollars to follow the child to another district, taking those vital funds away from already struggling schools? That only makes the problem worse.

It doesn't address the heart of the issue—the lack of funding. The very thing that schools need most. Instead, it punishes the schools that are already drowning. It drives a wedge deeper into an already fractured system. More families leave for better opportunities, and the spiral continues. Fewer kids. Fewer funds. Fewer resources.

In the end, it’s not the schools that are failing. It’s the system that was supposed to protect them, to invest in them, to give them a fighting chance. And every time we cut the funding, every time we make it harder for these schools to survive, it’s the children who suffer the most. The future we’re supposed to be building for them? It’s slipping away.

We need more than just a choice. We need to rebuild the foundation.
