Ascension Public Schools Ranked #1 in Louisiana for Fourth Consecutive Year in Student Achievement
District leads the state with 53% of students scoring Mastery or Advanced and earns top rankings across core academic subjects
Baton Rouge, La. – Ascension Public Schools has once again earned the distinction of being the #1 school district in Louisiana for the percentage of students in grades 3-12 achieving Mastery and Advanced on state assessments, according to 2025-26 LEAP results released today by the Louisiana Department of Education.
This marks the fourth consecutive year Ascension Public Schools has led the state in this important measure of student achievement, with 53% of students scoring at the Mastery or Advanced levels, the highest percentage of any Louisiana school district.
The district also earned top academic rankings in multiple subjects for students in grades 3-8:
- #1 in English Language Arts with 59% of students achieving Mastery or Advanced
- #1 in Science with 48% achieving Mastery or Advanced
- #1 in Social Studies with 52% achieving Mastery or Advanced
- #3 in Mathematics with 50% achieving Mastery or Advanced
Ascension Public Schools also continued to demonstrate strong performance among student subgroups, earning statewide rankings of:
- #2 for Students with Disabilities
- #3 for Economically Disadvantaged Students
- #3 for African American Students

To sustain this level of excellence for four consecutive years, while serving one of the state's largest student populations, is an accomplishment worth celebrating”, said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent Edith Walker, Ed.D. "These results reflect the determination of our students, the unwavering commitment of our teachers and staff, the support of our parents, and a community that believes in and invests in its public schools," Walker said. "We are grateful to everyone who plays a role in helping our students succeed."
While celebrating the achievement, Walker emphasized that the district remains focused on continuous improvement.
"There is still important work to do," she said. "Our goal is not simply to maintain our position, but to continue moving the needle for every student. In a school district as large and diverse as Ascension Public Schools, continued academic growth is something we are proud to celebrate. We will never stop looking for ways to improve outcomes, close achievement gaps, and ensure every child has the opportunity to reach his or her highest potential."
Ascension Public Schools remains the largest school district in Louisiana to consistently earn an “A” district performance rating while serving almost 24,000 students across its schools.
