Is September 11 something you’ll remember through homeschooling this year? 🇺🇸

For many of our children, 9/11 isn’t a memory—it’s history.

Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to slow down, talk about difficult moments in age-appropriate ways, and help our children understand the stories that have shaped the world they’re growing up in.

If you’re planning to include September 11 in your homeschool today, take a look at these resources that can help you begin the conversation thoughtfully. 🤍

How are you approaching 9/11 in your homeschool this year?

Teaching about September 11 calls for care, compassion, and age-appropriate context. These resources can help guide thoughtful classroom conversations.

August at Sweet Potato Academy. 💚

New routines became familiar ones. Work got done. Friendships started forming. Science Fair ideas started becoming real projects. There were snacks, games, questions, laughter, and a whole lot of figuring out how this particular group of kids does Academy together.

It’s funny how quickly a month can go from we’re just getting started to oh, this is us now.

A few of our favorite little moments from the first month back. 🌿

People Fair Fridays are officially open for enrollment. 🌿

For our next 7-week Friday program, each student will choose one remarkable person from history and spend the session getting to know them as more than a name, date, or paragraph in a textbook.

They’ll research their life and time, create a portrait, place their story on a collaborative timeline and map, design artifacts and museum labels, and eventually build an exhibit that helps someone else understand the person they chose.

And because knowing someone’s story well enough to tell it is different from simply collecting facts, students will also prepare to step into character—speaking in first person and answering questions as their historical figure.

Basically: seven weeks. One remarkable person. And a whole lot of ways to bring their story to life.

People Fair Fridays begin in October and are open to current Sweet Potato Academy students and Friday-only students.

Enrollment is open now.

You’re invited! 🔬🌿

For the last several weeks, our Science Fair Friday students have been asking questions, researching, experimenting, changing things that didn’t work, trying again, and slowly turning their ideas into projects of their own.

Now comes the fun part: they get to show you.

Join us Thursday, September 24 at 5:30 PM for the Sweet Potato Academy Science Fair Showcase.

Come see what they’ve discovered, hear about their projects, and help us celebrate all the curiosity, persistence, and work that happened along the way.

We’d love to have you there. 💚

There’s something really lovely about this age.

Old enough for independence and big conversations. Still young enough for games, snacks, silly little things with friends, and absolutely no need to rush any of it.

We care a lot about the learning that happens at Academy.

But we also care about creating a place where kids have room to be exactly where they are.
And right now, for these two, that looks a little bit like girlhood. 💚

This October, Friday Enrichment at Sweet Potato Academy is heading into history.

For our next 7-week session, students will choose a historical figure and spend their Fridays becoming the expert on their story — researching their life, tracing the people and moments that shaped them, building a visual timeline and map, and ultimately sharing what they discovered at our People Fair Showcase.

It’s history with somewhere to go:
research → create → connect → share.

Designed for homeschool students who love asking questions, making things, and diving deeper than a textbook page.

People Fair Fridays begin in October.
🌿 Open to current Academy students + Friday-only families

Come meet the people who made history — and let your child tell their story.

Hi, I'm Jessica. Since we're introducing the Sweet Potato Academy team this week, it seems only fair that I go last. 😂

I'm a mom of three and have been homeschooling since 2021, although homeschooling was always the plan. Life just kept confirming it for us. During the preschool years, we ran into problem after problem where the answer seemed to be some version of, Well...if we homeschool, we could do this differently.

So we did.

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is owning our time. I love that school can be a real priority without requiring everything else to orbit around it. We can take the trip, say yes to the extracurricular, follow the rabbit trail—and still take our children's education seriously.

As a homeschool mom, I'm a systems person. Give me curriculum to compare, a complicated schedule to untangle, or seventeen extracurriculars that somehow need to coexist and I'm happy. Ask me to create an elaborate themed morning basket and we may need to find you a different homeschool mom. 😂

Before Sweet Potato, I spent years in hotels. I started as a call center agent and eventually became an executive, where I discovered that I'm a master pattern finder. I love figuring out why something isn't working and building the system that makes it work better.

These days, I put that brain to work on Sweet Potato's big-picture vision, program design (Friday programs are especially my happy place), staff leadership, parent coaching, and support wherever it's needed. I'm not the person your child sees every morning at Academy—and that's intentional. You've already met the wonderful people who are.

Outside of all that, I'm the non-artist in a circle of artists who keeps attempting art anyway. I sketch. I art journal. I'm not particularly good at either, but thankfully that hasn't stopped me yet. 😂 I love Dalí and listen to a lot of Bastille. At home you can usually find me hanging out with my husband, Mike, our three kids, Daisy Kitty, and Sigge our doggo. And I remain deeply offended that I cannot somehow spend the same day in the mountains and at the beach.

I ask a lot of myself and of the person I want to become. I tend to believe that if something matters enough to ask of myself, I should be willing to rise to meet it.

So, hi. I'm Jessica. 🌿

One of the things I value most about the way we've built Sweet Potato Academy is that our students aren't relying on one person for every part of their day.

Sometimes a child needs someone to explain something a different way. Sometimes they need a little encouragement to keep going. Sometimes they need an adult to sit beside them for five minutes while they get over the hump and then let them take it from there.

Emily is one of those people for our students.

As a Core Tutor, she works alongside Marie and the rest of our team to give students the individual support they need while still encouraging them to become capable, confident learners.

And because every child arrives with their own curriculum, personality, strengths, and *very definite opinions about how their school day should go* 😂, flexibility matters here.

Emily brings that flexibility with a calm willingness to meet the student in front of her.

Some days that means helping with a lesson. Other days it's answering a question, encouraging another try, joining a hands-on activity, or simply being another trusted adult in the room.

That's one of the things a small learning environment allows us to do really well.

There is room to know the kids.

And we're so glad Emily is one of the people getting to know them. 🌿

**Meet Emily, one of our Core Tutors.**

Our teens are too cool for school.
They do, however, get their work done. 😂

Laptop at the window. Headphones on the floor. Book open on the couch. Everyone finding the spot that works for them.

Turns out learning doesn't require everyone sitting nicely at a desk. 🌿
