Fingerprint Music was started by Jacob Black in 2006 in the suburbs of Kansas City. It started as a side job while crafting his own original music, but his student roster soon exploded due to word-of-mouth referrals. When students started 'jumping ship' from traditional classical instructors to learn music under his method, it became clear that there was a widespread desire for a different approac

Through years of experimentation in working with students of all ages and learning styles, Jacob began to codify what would become the "Fingerprint Method." The method is all about figuring out the areas in which each individual student excels. Different musical styles, different learning styles, different personalities, all flourishing in the pursuit of one common goal: ENJOYING learning to make music. Part of the method that evolved organically as the business expanded is having the lessons in the students' homes. This began merely for convenience, but it became clear that it provided a way for the teacher to connect with the student and quite literally get in "their world." So, even when the business reached a point where starting a studio became an option, Jacob made the decision to maintain the in-home approach. In 2011, with a long waiting list of eager students, Jacob brought on Michael Dulin as Fingerprint's second private instructor. Michael was selected from over 50 applicants for the position, and it was immediately clear that his talents and intuition were a perfect fit with the Fingerprint philosophy.

It's way better to learn music you love, in a way that works for you (whether reading music, playing by ear, playing by chords, or improvising), on whatever instrument you wanna try (all our teachers offer piano, guitar, ukulele, and more), at whatever pace you want, online or in your home.
