Congratulations frat! Travis James Higgins III
The Virginia State University Department of Music welcomes Dr. Travis James Higgins III to the instrumental faculty serving as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Trumpet Studies. Dr. Higgins will teach applied trumpet and conduct the VSU Trumpet Ensemble.
Dr. Higgins earned his undergraduate degree in Music Performance from Prairie View A&M University studying under his trumpet instructor and mentor, Dr. Timmey Zachery. As a student, Dr. Higgins performed in multiple groups such as the Prairie view A&M wind ensemble, jazz band, trumpet ensemble, and orchestra, simultaneously. During this time, Dr. Higgins also marched DCI with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2012, and served as soloist and duettist with the Bluecoats in 2014.
Dr. Higgins received his Masters degree in Trumpet Performance with a Performers Diploma from Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music under retired Professor Edmund Cord. Most recently, Dr. Higgins received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance from the University Of Connecticut.
Dr. Higgins’ freelance experience includes performances with pop singer Solange Knowles, Young Artist Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Terra Haute Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, NewBurough Symphony Orchestra, Nashville contemporary music ensemble and freelancer around the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. He is also an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
Currently, Dr. Higgins is an active duty soldier of the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp.
