Today, on his birthday, we honor a legend. 👊
Allen Wheeler. Known to many as Master Wheeler, Chief, or simply Gramps.
To us, he is the man who founded our academy and the tournament that has brought martial artists together for 50 years.
Master Wheeler was decades ahead of his time. Although he dedicated much of his life to Isshin-ryu Karate, eventually earning the rank of 10th Dan, he understood something that many martial artists of his generation struggled to accept: martial arts must continue to evolve.
He was never afraid to explore something new. He studied Arnis, nerve center pressure point techniques, and even began learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu through VHS tapes long before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became a household name in the martial arts community!
Master Wheeler understood that Isshin-ryu was an important piece of the puzzle, but it wasn’t the entire puzzle. He believed there was always something more to learn, another skill to develop, and another way to become a better martial artist.
That philosophy is part of what makes his legacy so special.
Although Master Wheeler has been with the Lord for nearly two decades, his vision is still alive and well in Powell, Tennessee, through The Wheeler Academy and the tournament he founded.
Today, our academy teaches multiple martial arts disciplines, and The Fall Classic has evolved into a combat tournament that welcomes competitors from a variety of martial arts backgrounds. We believe Master Wheeler would be proud to see how his vision continues to grow.
This year, as we celebrate the 50th Annual Fall Classic, we will take time to honor Master Wheeler, his remarkable contributions to the martial arts, and the Isshin-ryu legacy that started it all.
More than fifty years later, we’re still building on the foundation he laid.
Happy heavenly birthday, Master Wheeler. Thank you for teaching us that tradition and evolution can go hand in hand.
The vision is alive & well.
