The Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House

The Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House A.k.a. "Harriet's House", this is a place dedicated to celebrating and promoting diversity. Each year, NWC welcomes students from over 20 countries.

For decades, Northwest College has attracted international scholars and students who engage with local communities in mutual learning experiences unheard of in most small towns. NWC has one of the largest populations of international students among all Wyoming community colleges and its multi-faceted program is used as a model for community colleges throughout the U.S. In addition, NWC actively re

cruits Hispanic and Native American students from across the region. NWC’s strong humanities program and international initiatives have been recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a model project for rural communities. That’s why the NEH awarded Northwest College with a grant in August 2011 for $131,000 to help facilitate the creation of an Intercultural Center. The grant requires NWC to provide two-to-one match for every grant dollar. With the NEH grant and leadership gifts, nearly two-thirds the necessary funding goal of $395,000 has already been secured. Achieving the goal will help us to buy a home located next to campus, renovate the home, and establish an endowment support ongoing programs. Moreover, your gift to an Intercultural Center at NWC will help us:
• Celebrate cultures through planned programming dedicated to American themes like Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, etc. as well as programs rooted in current events.
• Provide a “home away from home” for students from far away.
• Promote mutual respect and cooperation between cultures to bind us together rather than tear us apart.

Taste the Nations - Thursday, October 13th at 6:00pm

This year’s Taste the Nations event honors Professor Emerita Harriet Bloom-Wilson, who has positively impacted Intercultural Programs and the lives of countless students during her tenure at Northwest College. For 40 years – first as an employee and now as a retiree/volunteer – Harriet has served as Northwest College’s primary cultural ambassador. Whether teaching a French or cross-cultural studies class, leading a field studies trip to Europe, coordinating ‘Friendship Families’ for NWC’s international students or sponsoring Multicultural Series programs, she’s worked to bridge citizens from around the world to each other.

I’m deeply honored and hope to see many people there. TASTE THE NATIONS is always a highlight of the fall semester ! 🤗

Life changing!

Life changing!

Now is the time to apply to be one of our Friendship Families!

This coming fall, NWC Intercultural Programs expect our biggest incoming class yet! As COVID restrictions loosen, we are seeing a huge increase in international applications and our coaches have been hard at work to recruit students from around the globe. As such, we are looking for lots of Friendship Families for these new students. The questions included are designed to help us pair you with a student or students who will be a good fit for your family (shared interests, travel experience, languages, etc.)

As always, the program does not require any firm commitment from you. Previous FFs have invited their students to cook with them, see a movie, watch a sports game, grab a coffee, or even do some local travel! You are NOT required to drive students to the airport or host students overnight. Every student is different; some will be looking for more interaction than others, but most are looking for a friendly face in the community, opportunities to practice English, and a chance to experience American culture and family life. This is also a great chance for your family to make connections around the globe and to expose your children to a new perspective.
