“Gentle” parenting is currently the biggest problem I face as a teacher. It seems as though the advocates have a willful misunderstanding of child development. Absolutely, there is no need the yell, guilt, or shame children (and obviously not hit). However, their feelings, which they have not yet developed control or understanding of, cannot take center stage in your household and in their lives. Name the feeling, validate the feeling, but life still needs to go on if they are having feelings.

I HIGHLY recommend Jane Nelson’s books on Positive Discipline as a way to marry the good parts of “gentle” parenting with accurate child development.

So I finally read this article, and the article itself isn’t bad, but I do think that if what the article posits, that if you parent in a Montessori way that your life with children will be idyllic is off-base. I don’t think anyone thinks that it will create a perfect home and family with no problems. But maybe I’m wrong and that is what people expect from it. What I counsel my families is that parenting in a Montessori way gets them through the chaos and emotions of children with the skills they need as adults. And it doesn’t put up roadblocks that lead to more familial problems as other parenting choices might.

I also was very annoyed that she kept calling practical life “chores”. Sorry, cleaning up after yourself isn’t your chore, it is life.
