NWC Outdoor Recreation Offering an A.S. and A.A.S. degree in Outdoor Education in Wyoming. Courses taking place in the fiel It’s called adventure education for a reason. You’ll see.

You’ll immerse yourself in beautiful Yellowstone country, taking only one class at a time in NWC’s Outdoor FOCUS. You’ll learn:

Technical Skills — whether it’s ice climbing, scuba diving, spelunking or bicycling, your skills become an innate part of who you are when you concentrate on nothing else. Spend 14 days kayaking with us. Leadership — live in the backcountry for two weeks and you’ll run smack into your raw leadership style and find out how well you communicate with others. Then you’ll refine that style by leading Wilderness Orientation Week and high- and low- challenge courses in NWC’s DELTA program. Career Options — you love the adventure of the outdoors, but it takes more than that to make a living. At NWC, you’ll work in the field with people who are getting paid to do what they love outside. You’ll find where your passion can take you in the workforce.

Backpacking in the Beartooths. Fortunately we made it the weekend before the big
Snowstorm that closed the pass for the season. The weather was great, sunny and warm in the day and just below freezing at night. Great views and great experiences.

It was a busy Wednesday at Northwest College. The challenge course class spent the morning teambuilding and learning how to set up a rappel station, and do some rappelling themselves.

In the afternoon the Basic Search and Rescue students headed to the river to put in to practice the skills they have been working on the past two weeks.

We will finish out the week heading up to the mountains for a few days of backpacking. Outdoor education at its finest.

The Land Based Activities class had a little backcountry cook-off yesterday in class. They were tasked with planning a meal they would actually take with them on a backpacking trip that they had to cook on a backpacking stove. They came out pretty darn good.

It’s that time of year again!

Time to start thinking about applying for next year’s wildland fire positions.

Wyoming Hotshots will be opening applications for their GW-4 and GW-5 seasonal positions on October 30th.

If you’re looking to get on a Hotshot crew or continue building your wildland fire career, keep an eye out for the application window and don’t wait until the last minute.

As the season winds down, Wyoming Hotshots will be better able to answer and return calls for anyone looking for information about next season.

Experiential learning at its best! The Challenge Course class typically spend the first half of class participating in activities as if they are a group the course, the second half we flip and look from the practitioner side.

This week is the start of some swift water rescue training in the Basic Search and Rescue class. We worked with throw ropes followed by a little demo of Z-Rigs. Next week we will test what they can create on their own.

It’s happening, power poles for the new ropes courses arrived yesterday!! +/- 40 poles delivered to campus and 7 up to the field station, so exciting!

Construction will begin next week at the field station, hopefully soon after on campus!
