๐ŸŒฟ Our Gratitude to You ๐ŸŒฟ

Kids don't need to be chained to a desk for 7-8 hours a day to learn and grow. This poem, written by our 5th graders for our founder Mrs. Danhee, is proof of what's possible when learning looks different.

As we gear up for a new school year, we have just a couple of spots left in each classroom. If you're looking for something different for your child, we'd love to have you.

As we close another incredible school year, weโ€™re reflecting on something that canโ€™t be measured by grades alone: the deep sense of accomplishment that comes from hard work, perseverance, and growth. โค๏ธ

At Green Mountain Community School, Project-Based Learning is about more than completing projects โ€” itโ€™s about helping students discover what theyโ€™re capable of. Throughout the year, our students embraced challenges, welcomed feedback, solved problems, worked collaboratively, and created meaningful work they could truly be proud of. Time and time again, they showed us that when children are given high expectations, support, and trust, they rise to the occasion in remarkable ways.

As Danhee shares in her Graduation Day reflection, the greatest reward isn't just the final product โ€” it's watching children grow into confident, resilient, and capable young people who believe in themselves and their ability to make a difference. Thank you to our students, families, and faculty for being part of this journey. What a gift it has been to learn, grow, and accomplish so much together.

As we head into summer, we wish all of our families a season filled with rest, adventure, joy, and time to make wonderful memories together. Thank you for an amazing year โ€” we can't wait to see what next year brings!

As the school year winds down, students enjoyed a week filled with reflection, fun, and celebration! ๐ŸŽ‰

Last week was assessment week for Math and ELA, giving students the opportunity to showcase all theyโ€™ve learned and accomplished throughout the year.

In Music, students wrapped up the year by playing their favorite games and dances. The Ravens made sure school instruments were cleaned and returned in great condition before putting their musical skills to the test in a lively game of Extra Beat, Take a Seat. Meanwhile, the Eagles had a blast forming their own โ€œband,โ€ jamming together and taking turns performing solos.

Our final TimberNook session of the year was just as memorable. After reading a Dr. Seuss story, students created their own circus and spent much of the beautiful day exploring, creating, and adventuring by the river. Watching friendships grow, confidence blossom, and learning unfold naturally through play has been such a joy.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this year โ€” we wish all of our families a fun, restful, and adventure-filled summer! โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฒโค๏ธ

Our Biomes PBL has officially entered โ€œcrunch time,โ€ and students are bringing together weeks of research, creativity, and collaboration in exciting ways!

As they prepare for their upcoming biome musical performance, students have been using ELA time to practice reading lines fluently and confidently while strengthening teamwork, speaking skills, and creativity through theater integration. Theyโ€™ve also been collaborating on a large-scale biome map, presenting their biome dioramas for peer feedback, and adding final touches to their projects and adaptation facts.

Along the way, students explored climatograms, weather vs. climate, plant and animal adaptations, geography, and ecosystemsโ€”transforming their research into engaging presentations designed to teach others about Earthโ€™s diverse biomes. It has been incredible watching students synthesize science, literacy, geography, theater, music, art, and collaboration into one meaningful interdisciplinary project. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŽญ

Our Biomes PBL continues to come alive as students dive deeper into the fascinating question:
"How can we identify and explain the unique and diverse adaptations of plants and animals in Earthโ€™s biomes?"

This week, students expanded their biome dioramas and visual projects, using trackers, checklists, and graphic organizers to guide their research and stay purposeful in their work. Itโ€™s been exciting to watch them take ownership of their learning and grow more confident with each step.

A class favorite was Mr. Thomโ€™s hands-on lesson on topography, where students used their own hands to model mountains, valleys, and other landforms - turning geography into something they could literally see and feel!

Students also strengthened their mapping skills, exploring biomes across North America and around the world while making connections between climate, location, plants, and animals. Eagles connected science and literacy by creating layered books inspired by This Is Our Earth, bringing Earthโ€™s systems and landforms to life in a creative way.

To top it all off, students Zoomed with wildlife ecology expert and Poultney native Sarah Grove, who shared stories and insights from ecosystems across Vermont, Alabama, New York, and Colorado. Her real-world experiences helped students see how science, geography, and environmental stewardship connect far beyond the classroom.

Weโ€™re seeing incredible growth as students synthesize science, geography, research, and the arts while preparing for their final projects and performances!

Biomes PBL: Thinking Like Scientists! ๐ŸŒ๐ŸฆŽ

Building on our ongoing Biomes PBL, students continued exploring our driving question:

This week, they took a deeper dive into physical, physiological, and behavioral adaptations, uncovering how living things survive in different environments. A highlight was comparing land and marine iguanas - noticing similarities, spotting differences, and using evidence to explain how each is perfectly adapted to its habitat.

The excitement continued with a hands-on simulation, where students became predators collecting moths - discovering how traits like camouflage can impact survival over time. Through observation, discussion, and experimentation, students are truly beginning to think like scientists - asking questions, forming hypotheses, and backing up their ideas with evidence.

We canโ€™t wait to see how they apply these insights as they continue researching their biomes and prepare for their final performances!

Our New PBL Journey Has Begun! ๐ŸŒ

How do plants and animals survive in some of the most extreme places on Earth? Thatโ€™s the big question guiding our newest project:

Students kicked things off by exploring the six major biomes, building background knowledge, and choosing one to study more deeply. This week, they zoomed out to understand how Earthโ€™s systems โ€” the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere โ€” work together to shape life across the planet. ๐ŸŒŽ

Using โ€œclimate decoderโ€ data, students created world maps to uncover global weather patterns and see how climate influences living things. Now, theyโ€™re gearing up to dive deeper into research and bring their learning to life through a creative performance โ€” a play that will showcase their understanding in a fun and engaging way!

We canโ€™t wait to see where their curiosity takes them next!

Weโ€™re grateful to share an important and exciting update for our school. ๐Ÿ”Š

Brylea Davenport will be stepping in as the next Director of Green Mountain Community School.

Brylea is already a valued part of our community as a parent and outdoor educator โ€” and she brings a deep understanding of the heart, mission, and children of GMCS. Her leadership ensures that our school will continue into the next academic year and beyond.

We are entering this new chapter from a place of strength. Over the years, we have built a solid foundation โ€” financially, programmatically, and as a community. We are supported by dedicated teachers, engaged families, and a shared belief in what this school makes possible for children.

Bryleaโ€™s leadership is a commitment to the long-term future of GMCS, and we are deeply grateful for her willingness to step forward and serve our community in this way.

As this transition unfolds, Danhee Bhakta, GMCS Founder, will remain actively involved as a member of the Board, continuing to support Brylea and the school moving forward.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. The future of GMCS is bright, and we are excited for what lies ahead.
