In Bermuda for 5 weeks this summer, Professor Laura Haynes is working with students to collect and grow small plankton called foraminifera—or forams. Forams are a group of organisms that bridge together biology, geology, and chemistry: they help to regulate carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Funded by a grant from NOAA, they're investigating how these creatures would respond to an ocean-based climate solution called ocean alkalinity enhancement. Forams would likely be affected, and their research is a key aspect of assessing the safety and viability of this climate solution.

We had to share this amazing story about Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage, founded by Susan Baur '61.

The Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage estimate they’ve removed 6,000 pounds of refuse from ponds on Cape Cod. “There’s no better feeling,” one said.

Helping to make the world better, 23 Vassar students have taken part in Projects for Peace since its founding in 2007. The organization recently had a gathering at Vassar, "The Ecology of Peacebuilding."
