Grade 1 students had their first session of a new PDS class today: Spanish mathematics. Once a week, 1st and 2nd graders will be approaching their math learning through a Spanish lens as a way to immerse themselves more in the language and cross-pollinate their knowledge of both subjects. They’re already discovering the similarities between number pronunciation, and will gradually learn the Latin roots of mathematical terms as they go.

Today, grades 1-8 contributed data to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s “Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor” citizen science program! Our PDSers recorded the Hudson River’s current, temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen levels, nitrate levels, and pH, as well as the surrounding wind speed and air temperature. They also got to put on waders and use a seine net to catch and identify different marine life that resides in the river. All of their data is being submitted to the NYSDEC along with the findings of thousands of other students to create a complete “day-in-the-life” picture of the Hudson.

Everyone had so much fun learning about the river, and the experiential nature of the event helped students better understand scientific terms, methods, and concepts beyond words on a page.

We had another wonderful visit to The Preserve at Vassar today, this time with the preK and kindergarten! With the Vassar Environmental Cooperative’s Program Manager, Lindsay, the class learned about seeds and trees through a read-aloud and various engaging activities in the Learning Forest. Student did seed identification and discovered how each one grows and is affected by the environment, made necklaces from real tree trunks, designed their own personal trees through finger painting, and even create beautiful leaf-rubbing drawings. After all that was done, they also practiced observation by matching natural items they found around the Preserve with color cards. Everyone had a great time, and learned so much!

Thank you again to Lindsay and the whole team for providing such a great experience for our students! We can’t wait to come back.

In preparation for the Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor citizen science event with NYSDEC next week, middle school students went to The Preserve at Vassar to learn about local topography and collect data on water and aquatic organisms. Using nets, cups, and spoons, the young scientists were able to catch and identify tadpoles, frogs, dragonfly larvae, 4-toed salamanders, water striders, pouch snails, and even a painted turtle! At the end, the group enjoyed a nice picnic lunch by the Preserve’s Learning Forest, where they worked on the bird blind and dug out their own canal in the wetlands. It was an excellent active learning experience!

It warmed our hearts to be with so much of the PDS community at last night’s Kenyon House Ribbon Cutting. With students, families, current and former faculty, alumni going back to the 1960s, and friends of the school, we formally welcomed a renewed Kenyon House as our new home. The official ribbon cutting was carried out by three committed members of the PDS lower school, followed by speeches from Head of School Spiro Gouras, Board Secretary and parent Kate Grantz, Trustee Ashley Todd-Diaz ’03, and Board Chair Erik Huestis ’99. Everyone enjoyed seeing Kenyon, eating the complimentary food catered by El Azteca, and—most importantly—spending time with each other. It was a truly magical night.

Friday was 2026’s “getting to know you” all-school activity, where students, faculty, and staff got to learn about each other through games outside! Each all-school activity group formed a circle and shared things like their favorite movies, pets, ice cream flavors, and facts about themselves to discover what they had in common with their schoolmates. They also participated in rotating one-on-one conversations with students of every grade level and teachers of all different subjects, getting familiar with everybody they see at school. The activity was great fun, and served as a wonderful way to reinforce that everyone matters at PDS.

Hello, Kenyon! On Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming PDS families into our new home for the first time. Parents, students, and teachers getting to know each other and familiarizing themselves with Kenyon House made for a fantastic way to ease into the new year.
