I’m so excited to be joining a virtual college admissions panel this week with over 2,500 students and families tuning in! 🎓✨

One of the questions I’ll be asked is:

“What makes a college application truly stand out in a sea of strong candidates?”

After more than 20 years working in education and helping students gain admission to highly selective universities across the U.S. and internationally, my answer is always the same:

💡 Clarity beats perfection.

The students who stand out aren’t necessarily the ones with the highest test scores, the most awards, or the longest list of activities.

They’re the students who know who they are.

Students whose essays, activities, leadership experiences, and academic choices tell a cohesive story about their passions, values, and future goals.

Admissions officers review thousands of applications every year.

The applications they remember are the ones that make them say:

“This student would add something special to our campus.”

Colleges aren’t building a class of perfect students.

They’re building a community.

And the most successful applicants are those who understand their unique story and have the confidence to share it authentically.

I’d love to hear from you:

📚 Just finished reading The Woman I Wanted to Be by Diane von Furstenberg.

One of the things I love most about reading biographies and memoirs is that they remind us that every person has a story.

Not a perfect story.
Not a straight path.
Not a story without setbacks, doubts, or unexpected turns.

As I work with students, I often see the pressure they feel to have everything figured out—the perfect major, the perfect college, the perfect plan.

But life rarely unfolds that way.

What matters most is having the courage to keep learning about yourself, trusting your instincts, and moving forward even when the next step isn’t completely clear.

One message from this book stayed with me: be your own best friend and take ownership of your life.

For students, that means embracing your unique journey rather than comparing yourself to everyone around you.

For parents, it means remembering that growth often happens in the moments of uncertainty, exploration, and self-discovery.

The most successful people I’ve met aren’t necessarily the ones who had everything planned from the beginning.

They’re the ones who were willing to evolve into the person they wanted to become.

✨ Keep learning.
✨ Keep growing.
✨ Keep writing your story.

Because your future isn’t something you find—it’s something you create.

This week, I had the privilege of visiting two schools and leading a college admissions masterclass for students.

And surprisingly, we didn’t start with GPAs, SAT scores, majors, or college rankings.

We started with something far more powerful: questions.

Using Harvard’s Question Formulation Technique (QFT), students learned how to think critically, challenge assumptions, and ask the kinds of questions that lead to deeper learning, stronger essays, meaningful extracurricular involvement, and greater self-awareness.

After more than 20 years working with students, I’ve seen that the students who stand out in the admissions process aren’t necessarily the ones with all the answers.

They’re the ones who know how to ask thoughtful questions.

✨ The right question can uncover a passion.
✨ The right question can inspire a research project.
✨ The right question can transform a college essay.
✨ The right question can change a student’s future.

Over the years, I’ve developed my own college admissions and self-discovery blueprint that incorporates these strategies to help students identify their strengths, build authentic applications, and find colleges that truly fit them.

If you’re a student, parent, educator, or school administrator and would like a copy of my blueprint, send me a DM with the word BLUEPRINT and I’d be happy to share it.

Thank you to the students and schools who made this week so inspiring. Watching curiosity turn into confidence never gets old. ❤️

👇 What’s one question every high school student should be asking themselves right now?

After reviewing thousands of college essays over the past 20 years, one thing has remained true:

The essays that stand out are the ones that feel memorable, authentic, and deeply human.

I always tell my students:
✨ Make it fun.
✨ Make it reflective.
✨ Make it YOU.

Some students are better suited for a narrative essay — a story with movement, tension, and reflection around one meaningful experience.

Others shine through a montage essay — weaving together memories, passions, small moments, and themes that reveal who they are beyond grades and résumés.

And one of my favorite parts of this process?
Years later… I still remember my students’ essays.

I remember the student who connected architecture to childhood sketches.
The student whose essay centered around late-night baking with family.
The student who wrote about language, identity, music, engineering, soccer, grief, humor, culture, curiosity.

Not because the essays were “perfect.”
But because they felt REAL.

Admissions officers read thousands of applications.
The essays they remember are the ones that create connection.

That’s where strategy meets storytelling — and where students truly shine. 🤍

121 five-star Google reviews.

I am so incredibly grateful.

It’s funny because last week I was telling all my seniors, “You’re stuck with me until you’re 120 years old.”

Well… looks like now it’s 121.

One thing families often tell me is that I bring a very calm, zen energy to this process. And that means so much to me because college admissions can feel overwhelming at times, and I always want students to feel supported, understood, and at peace throughout the journey.

I like to do things thoughtfully, efficiently, and in a way that feels personal.

And that’s why this milestone means so much to me.

I’ve never wanted this practice to feel transactional or rushed. I truly take the time to get to know every student, check in on how they’re doing, celebrate their growth, and help them discover the place where they will thrive not only academically, but personally too.

Over the years, this community has grown through trust, meaningful relationships, and word of mouth from incredible families.

To every student and family who has trusted me:
thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And to all of my current and future students…
you’re officially stuck with me until you’re 121 and beyond.

Lots of love.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who are the first teachers, biggest cheerleaders, late-night listeners, and constant source of strength behind every student’s journey. 🤍

As a college counselor, one of the most special parts of my work is witnessing the love, sacrifice, guidance, and unwavering support that mothers pour into their children every single day. From celebrating acceptances to navigating uncertainty together, your presence shapes far more than an application — it shapes confidence, resilience, and character.

Today, we celebrate you. Thank you for all the invisible work, encouragement, and heart you give so selflessly.

With gratitude,

Matcha and palmeritas 🤍

Even after May 1st, one of the most meaningful parts of this journey is still staying connected with my students, celebrating their happiness, and supporting them through every new chapter ahead. This work has always been so much more than college admissions to me.

And while many students are just beginning to think about applications, I’ve already started my signature essay methodology with my juniors. My approach goes far beyond “how to write a college essay.” I guide students through deep reflection, storytelling strategy, symbolism, and authentic voice so their essays feel personal, unforgettable, and truly representative of who they are. The strongest essays are never forced. They come from learning how to transform everyday moments, culture, family, passions, and lived experiences into compelling narratives that admissions officers genuinely remember. One of the biggest comments I hear from juniors:
‘My life isn’t interesting enough to write about.’

But the strongest college essays are not about extraordinary events.
They’re about ordinary moments… told with depth, reflection, and perspective.

I once wrote an essay inspired by something as simple as my culture, my environment, and everyday experiences growing up in Venezuela.
That essay got me in.

Admissions officers are not looking for drama.
They’re looking for how you think, what you notice, and how your experiences have shaped you.

If you’re struggling to find your topic, don’t look for something bigger.
Look closer.

Your story is already there. HighSchoolJunior ClassOf2027 CollegeBound FutureCollegeStudent EssayTips StudentSuccess CollegePrep EducationConsultant IvyLeagueAdmissions TopColleges AdmissionsExpert EliteEducation CollegeStrategy

Today feels different.

Not because it’s May 1st.
Not because it’s commitment day.
But because I got to witness something really special.

Today, I visited a school and saw one of my students… the same student who trusted me with her journey, her doubts, her dreams.

And today, she’s committing to Stanford University!

I’m so proud of her!!!

Not just because she got into Stanford, but because of who she became in the process. The resilience. The discipline. The growth. The moments where things felt uncertain and she kept going anyway.

This is why I do what I do.

Every student is different. Every story matters. And today is a reminder that behind every acceptance is a journey that deserves to be celebrated.

To all my students, past and present
I love you, I believe in you, and I am always celebrating you

Today and always
