Back-to-school hot take: more isn’t always better.

It’s club rush season, and suddenly everyone is rushing to sign up for everything.

Another club. Another activity. Another line for the future résumé.

But after more than 20 years working with students, I’d much rather see a student do a few things really, really well than dip their toes into ten things just because they think colleges want to see them.

Go deeper.

Take on responsibility. Build something. Stay long enough to make an impact. Explore an interest beyond the obvious. Let yourself actually become good at something.

Because a long list of activities doesn’t necessarily tell me who you are.

What you choose to do with your time does.

So yes, go to club rush. Explore. Meet people. Try something new.

Just remember: you don’t have to do everything to build a strong college profile.

Depth > collecting activities.

What if getting ahead isn’t about doing more, but knowing what matters most?

That’s what stayed with me after reading Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown.

Students today have so much coming at them. Opportunities, expectations, advice, comparison, and the feeling that they should always be doing something more.

But one of the most valuable skills a young person can develop is learning how to recognize what truly matters to them.

I see this so often in college counseling. The students who stand out aren’t always the ones with the longest list of accomplishments. They’re the ones who are curious, who know what excites them, who develop their interests, and who can tell you something meaningful about who they are becoming.

That’s something I want for every student I work with.

Because education is about so much more than getting into college. It’s about discovering who you are, what you care about, and where you want to go next.

My favorite takeaway from this book?

More of what matters.

Your college list shouldn’t be a wish list. It should be a strategy.

And the list you create in August may not be the same one you submit in October.

Why? Because so much can change.

A new SAT score.
A campus visit that completely shifts your perspective.
A clearer idea of what you want to study.
A financial conversation at home.
Or simply realizing that a school you once loved isn’t actually the right fit.

When I build a college list with a student, I’m looking beyond rankings.

Academic rigor. Major. Campus culture. Opportunities. Finances. Admissions strategy. And most importantly: where that student can actually thrive.

The goal isn’t to have the most impressive college list.

It’s to have the smartest one for YOU.

Back-to-school season can make it feel like everyone is already ahead.

They’re not.

A new school year isn’t about doing more. It’s about being intentional about what you do next.

Protect your academics.
Go deeper in the activities that actually matter to you.
Build real relationships with your teachers.
And think about where you want to be by the end of the year—then work backward from there.

I use backward design with my students all the time: start with the goal, then build the steps that will get you there.

You don’t need to have your entire future figured out this August.

You just need to start with intention. 🌿

The Common App is officially open—and this is where the exciting part begins. 🎉

But opening the application does not mean rushing to fill in every box.

A strong application is built with intention.

Before you submit, ask yourself:

Does my college list make sense for my goals?
Do my activities reflect who I am?
Does my essay sound like me?
Does every part of my application tell a clear and cohesive story?

The strongest applicants are not always the ones who move the fastest. They are the ones who have a strategy, understand their priorities, and present themselves thoughtfully.

This is one of my favorite times of the year. A new admissions season is here, and so many meaningful stories are about to be told.

The Common App is open. Let’s make every part of it count.

Most students think the college application starts with the Common App.

I don’t.

The strongest applications start much earlier—with a clear vision of the end goal.

One of the concepts I use with my students is backward design. Before we write essays or choose activities, we ask one question:

When an admissions officer closes your application, what do you want them to remember about you?

Once you know that answer, every decision becomes more intentional. Your activities, essays, supplements, and college list all begin to tell one clear story.

That’s why I always say: don’t just complete your application—design it.

This is the mindset I teach in my Blueprint and with every student I work with.
