Kids struggling with autism rarely get the recognition they deserve for the small, but meaningful accomplishments they achieve. During April each year, we highlight the struggles; as well as, the joys and successes of kids and families dealing with autism. Our son, Matthew, was initially diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) at 18 months old. Commonly

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sammy. He was Matthew's protector!, Caitlyn's comfort, and Ronny's buddy. He was such a gentle dog filled with love for everyone. He was more than a service dog. What he has meant to our family is immeasurable. We miss and love you!

Today, I was honored to give a class presentation on service dogs to Mrs. Peleschak's 7th grade English classes, who have been studying about the different types of service dogs. As part of the discussion, Sammy showed an "over", which is used as a calming task when Matthew gets upset. It was fun and interactive. The kids paid attention and were generally very interested. A great experience overall.

Since Matthew turned 16 at the beginning of the month, we were adamant about getting him a COVID vaccine since he is unable to tell us when he is sick. Well, we got a call from our local CVS Pharmacy that they had an extra shot available. Sammy helped him through the whole thing.

Sammy did a great job today! Matthew had dental surgery to remove his wisdom teeth, get a deep cleaning, and a protective coating. Surgery went well. Sammy was very worried about him when he came out of surgery. After a little bit of a rough wake up, Matthew is bouncing back strong. Overall, a success.

Matthew went way out of his comfort zone on his last day of swimming lessons and went off the diving board. He also went down the slide. It was a great last lesson of the season. He really enjoys having Caitlyn help him.

When you time it perfectly and you are literally the only one shopping at ALDI. WIN!

In addition to all the new therapies Matthew is getting throughout the week, he started therapeutic swimming lessons. Today, Caitlyn helped us out and took him down the slide at the end of the session.

Practicing social distancing and the use of a face mask. They both did really great considering they haven't been out together since March.
