My 7th and 8th Grade Art students created these fascinating Notan Japanese Art pieces that focus on positive and negitive space. They experimented with using a high constrast black and white mirror image to create a clean, balanced design. Great work by these talented Trenton Middle School Artists!

Insiration Art: this week's art was inspired by French Artist Andre Derain's London Bridge, painted in 1906. He used VIVID COLOR in response to the new technology of black and white photography. When art critics saw his work they hated it. One said it looked like a wild beast (fauvism) had painted it with all that strong color. Other artists joined Derain in experimenting with color theory. This group of French artists were known as Fauvists and included one of my favorite artists Henri Matisse.
The Trenton Middle School Artists did a great job this week with their use of COLOR! Great work!

Happy Thanksgiving from some of the talented artists at Trenton Middle School!

Inspiration Art: Students were inspired by Norman Rockwell's "Freedom From Want" oil painting where he illustrated some of his friends and family gathered around a Thankgiving dinner table. Rockwell included himself slyly peering back at the viewer from the lower right corner of the painting. We discussed the meaning of "parody" and students were shown numerous parodies of this painting. Then artists had a choice...to draw their own parody of this famous painting...or draw something they are thankful for. Hope you enjoy their art as much as I do! Happy Thanksgiving!

John Singleton Copley painted Watson and the Shark in 1778, a true story about a cabin boy swimming off the coast of Cuba, who gets his foot bitten off during a shark attack.
Trenton Middle School Artists were inspired to design their own version of this masterful painting, and WOW! They created some great work!

Giacometti inspired foil figures showing MOVEMENT.

Students practiced capturing quick, gesture (movement) drawings of their classmates, then turned those flat, 2D drawings into a fully formed 3D sculpture using Giacometti's elongated style and rough texture. They then worked together to create interesting shadows of their foil figures using flashlights on their phones. Fun!

Great work by these Middle School Artists!
