In the Fall, Dr. Stanavage is teaching British Writers- Shakespeare. It will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30- 12:30.

Shakespeare occupies a privileged position in Western culture, and his plays continueto be produced, read, and adapted 400 years later. This course will examine selectedplays of Shakespeare in their own cultural context and in adaptations and productionsfrom the 18th – 21st centuries. We will consider how these adaptations and specificproductions engage with changing ideas about gender, sexuality, race, and culture andhow they make specific interventions in those traditions. We’ll contextualize our workwith critical and theoretical readings. Course requirements include two essays, a takehomefinal, and a 5-10 minute presentation on a selected production/adaptation ofone of the plays. In addition, students will be expected to participate in classdiscussions and in-class assignments. Course readings include King Lear, Macbeth, TheMerchant of Venice, Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Tempest. (WGS elective)
