“Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Did You Know? Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week . . .

Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.

In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women’s History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980, as National Women’s History Week.”

The Clarkson University AISES Chapter, in partnership with the Office of Access Initiatives, invites students to attend an Indigenous Community Gathering on Wednesday, March 4, from 4:30–6:00 PM in Clarkson’s Student Center MPRs.

This gathering is a space for Indigenous students from Clarkson and nearby colleges to connect, meet new people, and strengthen community. Join us for an evening centered on relationship-building, shared experiences, and community support.

Join the Office of Access Initiatives for an interactive leadership experience, What’s Your Bigger Game?, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from 5:00–6:30 PM in the Student Center MPRs.

Most of us are taught how to succeed—but few of us are taught why we’re here. In this 90-minute interactive session, you’ll explore what it means to live, learn, and lead as a Bigger Game Player—someone who acts from an inner sense of purpose, not just external expectations.

Participants will leave with:

-A deeper connection to what truly matters to you

-Language for your personal hunger for meaning and impact

-A new way to think about leadership—from the inside out

-One bold action you can take now, as a student, to play a Bigger Game

The session will be facilitated by Melissa O’Mara ’86, Founder & CEO of The Leaders Co-Lab. A Clarkson alum and leadership coach, Melissa works with students, leaders, and organizations navigating change, uncertainty, and purpose-driven growth.

National Black History Month has its origins in 1915, when historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Through this organization, Dr. Woodson initiated the first Negro History Week in February 1926. Dr. Woodson selected the week in February that included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two key figures in the history of Black Americans.

In 1975, President Ford issued a Message on the Observance of Black History Week urging all Americans to “recognize the important contribution made to our nation’s life and culture by black citizens.”

In 1986, Congress passed Public Law 99-244, which designated February 1986 as “National Black (Afro-American) History Month.” This law noted that February 1, 1986 would “mark the beginning of the sixtieth annual public and private salute to Black History.” The law further directed the president to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe February 1986 as Black History Month with the appropriate ceremonies and activities.
