📚🍎 Education Day brought 65 future educators to campus yesterday!

Students got a firsthand look at what it’s like to study education at SUNY Potsdam, connecting with our Teacher Education students and getting hands-on experience along the way. 🐻

It was a great day of learning, asking questions, making connections and imagining what their own future in education could look like!

Ada Lovelace is often regarded as one of the first computer scientists, and her influence was on full display in the Barrington Student Union today. 💜

CSTEP hosted "Ada's Influence: Women in STEM at Potsdam," an interactive event featuring SUNY Potsdam women faculty and staff representing fields of study including parasitology, bioarchaeology, psychology, biology, environment & sustainability, chemistry and mathematics. Students stopped by to join activities, connect with campus professionals and explore the many possibilities within STEM.

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Last night, we gathered at the new fire pit in the former Dunn Hall space to celebrate a new chapter for this corner of campus. With a fire, marshmallows, glow sticks and plenty of community spirit, it was a great first gathering in a space designed for connection. 🌲🔥

Now, it’s your turn to help shape what comes next!

What should we call this new campus gathering space? We’re looking for a name that feels welcoming, memorable and reflects the ways our campus community can gather and connect here.

💡 Have an idea? Submit your name suggestion by Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. here: https://bit.ly/4rRhsIr

Selected ideas will move forward to a community vote. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! 🐻

🍂 Fall Fest was the perfect way to celebrate the season! 🎃🍎

SUNY Potsdam students enjoyed pumpkin painting, apple c***r and donuts, s’mores around the campfire, wagon rides across campus and live music at Marshall Park. 🍎🔥🎶

Basically, all the best parts of fall in one afternoon. 🍁🐻

Last Tuesday, The Crane School of Music hosted an open singing workshop with local elementary students from Parishville-Hopkinton Central School! It was part of the Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher residency, with alumni Mary Biddlecombe '99 and Tucker Biddlecombe '98 of Vanderbilt University.

The residency, "The Singing Voice in Music Education," gave Crane's choral and music education majors practical tools for teaching through singing, techniques they can bring to their future classrooms as music teachers.

🌱 The WISER Greenhouse is more than a growing space. It's a classroom.

Students in Dr. Kate Cleary's Sustainable Agriculture class have been putting knowledge into practice through hands-on labs, and earlier this month they worked alongside Cleary to add plants to the new WISER Botanical Garden—where there are now more than 50 different native species.

"The WISER Botanical Garden includes many species important to native pollinators, and edible species like blueberries, viburnum, and wild bergamot," said Cleary. "The WBG will serve as a hands-on garden for student research, a beautiful background for campus events, and a demonstration space for community gardeners interested in utilizing native plants."

The WISER Greenhouse and new WISER Botanical Garden were made possible through the generous support of alumnus Robert Wagner '75 and his wife, Wendy Wagner (Hon. '17).
