To finish off our Edible Plants week, we would like to invite you to our community campfire tonight! We will be joined by Len Mackey, a North Country resident who founded Ancient Earth Skills, a program dedicated to teaching earth-based and traditional living skills. Len will help us identify some useful (and tasty) plants!

The campfire will start at 7:00 pm at the Wachtmeister Field Station. We will spend about an hour exploring around the Field Station and the Kip Trail to look out for some edible plants in our environment. The event will finish up with some delicious s’mores, and if we’re brave, a taste of what we collect! Our campfires are all free to attend and perfect for all ages. We hope to see you there!

Thank you Dad for teaching me to track and hunt, fish and trap, to skin Deer, and sit quietly in the forest. Thank you for making me buy my own muskrat traps when I was 7. Thank you for showing me how to call Turkeys and Whitetails. So much of what you taught me as a young lad is stil part of my life, my greatest joy and inspiration. Thank you for your humor and wild ways! Thank you for your love and hugs! Thank you for loving Nature. Miss you and Love you man! See you on the other side.

Teaching Frame Drum Making MAPS Meet this year was delightful! Rainy days are the best crafting days! My heart is especially happy when surrounded by such wonderful humans applying so much love (and elbow grease), building with Whitetail Deer rawhide, sinew, buckskin, wool and pine, to generate more good vibes in the form of a beautiful drum! Being together in this way, creating useful beauty, is one of my favorite things in the world! Many thanks to the Deer, the Trees, and the Sheep for all the materials. And Big Thanks for some of the awesome snapshots!

Deer Mask Capes for hunting, teaching, hide and seek, and fun around the fire. Inspired by Ishi and my father Dennis, they are a tribute to these great men and the Whitetail Deer who make up so much of my diet, and time spent hunting on foot every fall season.

I’ve enjoyed sitting tree stands, but now more than ever I love hunting on the ground and getting as close as I can to these amazing creatures. Because of the added challenge it raises the bar for me as a hunter, pushing my ability to scout stalk and call them to the highest level.

It’s especially exciting when they come directly to me because they hear the sounds I make with my voice or movements. Talk like a Deer. Walk like a Deer. See what happens. Sounds silly, but it’s incredibly effective, and has helped me put the best food in my family’s belly, year after year, and offers close encounter memories I’ll never forget.

If you want to learn more about ground hunting, I have developed an online master class based on over 30 years of successful hunts. Hours of tutorials on scouting, stalking, tracking, calling, and attracting Whitetail Deer, as well as Wild Turkey, and Coyote, will help you get close for an amazing wildlife experience, a photo opportunity, or to fill your freezer.

What’s your favorite way to hunt?

I love sharing the drum! Djembe music is truly a joyful heart beat that embodies love, acceptance and the celebration of our shared humanity. I am blessed to facilitate such exuberance! Big Thanks to all my teachers and their spirit of generosity!

How to become invisible anywhere… a buckskin ghillie suit definitely helps, but you don’t need camouflage clothing to be undetectable, while hunting animals or playing hide and seek. Observe your landscape and fuse your presence with the elements. Match your body’s reflectance, tones, textures and hues with what is naturally present, quiet your mind, and definitely don’t fart! Farticles get me busted every time. Unless I’m turkey hunting. Fortunately they don’t smell in three dimensions like the Deer.

For more information check out the extensive camouflage and stalking tutorials in Ancient Earth Skills online course: Natural Voice Calling for Turkey, Deer, Coyote and Raven. They’re awesome and based on a lifetime of experience with the wild critters of northern NY!
