Fall reading is bringing science, friendship, and imagination together at Trout & Heron 🍂📚
Our seasonal stories invite us to notice changes in the natural world, wonder about leaves and seeds, and imagine what might be hiding in an autumn forest. They also open up thoughtful conversations about friendship: how we work together, navigate disagreements, and make room for one another.
From the cozy teamwork of Pumpkin Soup to the playful world of A Mischief of Mice, these books remind us that a story can be both a joyful read and a starting point for learning.

Our second novel read aloud of the year is A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold 📚

We love how much this story gives us to think and talk about. Through Bat’s point of view, we meet a character with autism who loves animals and has his own ways of experiencing and understanding the world. When Bat’s veterinarian mom brings home an orphaned baby skunk to care for, he hopes he can convince his family to let the skunk stay.

The story opens the door to conversations about caring for animals and wildlife, living between two homes, and navigating school, friendship, and family relationships. As we follow Bat’s experiences, we’re invited to consider different perspectives and build empathy and understanding. 💛

What helps children thrive as learners? A sense of safety, care, and belonging.

When children feel connected, they have a stronger foundation for curiosity, confidence, and deeper academic learning. And for our youngest learners, school is also a place to practice living and learning together: listening, sharing space, showing care, and building community.

We’ve been exploring manners, starting at the table. Manners can look different across cultures and families, so we’re making room for conversation and curiosity. Stories help us think about how our words and actions affect others—and sometimes a gentle cue can help a child know what to do in a new situation.

We’re loving these books: 📚 Welcome to Our Table 📚 Do I Have to Say Hello? 📚 Tumford’s Rude Noises 📚 Miss Molly’s School of Manners 📚 Unicorns Have Bad Manners

Learning is academic, social, and human. We’re glad to make room for all of it. 🌱

🧡 Every Child Matters.

Today at Trout & Heron, we marked Orange Shirt Day by learning about Phyllis Webstad and the orange shirt taken from her when she arrived at residential school at six years old.

Through age-appropriate conversations, we reflected on the children separated from their families and why every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and proud of who they are—including their language, culture, and traditions.

We also read three beautiful books:

📚 When We Were Alone by David A. Robertson, illustrated by Julie Flett
📚 Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard, illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal
📚 When We Are Kind by Monique Gray Smith, illustrated by Nicole Neidhardt

These stories opened conversations about family, identity, belonging, and the kindness we show to one another and the land.

At the end of the day, we made bannock and gathered to share it—a moment to come together and reflect.

Learning the truth and listening to Indigenous voices are part of an ongoing journey—one we can begin with our youngest learners. 🧡

Dear Bookstore by Emily Arrow has quickly become a class favorite! Our students love its celebration of the magic of books—and especially listening and singing along to the song. 📚🎶

We love books, stories, and the places that help us discover them. 💛🌱

Here are a few of our picture book favorites from last week! 📚💛

Each story sparked curiosity, conversation, creativity, and new ideas in our classroom. There is something magical about gathering together around a beautiful book—and seeing where the story takes us next.

Story Rug, written by Sophie Blackall and illustrated by Phoebe Wahl, is inspiring a new class project! 📖🧶

As the colder months approach, we will begin gathering fabric scraps and other textiles to recycle into a collaborative story rug of our own. Together, we’ll explore how old materials can be given new life through storytelling, creativity, and community. ♻️💛

Kid-Approved Summer Reading Recommendation! ☀️📚

Looking for some summer reading for ages 8+?
We recommend graphic novels! These engaging books combine rich storytelling with visual literacy, making them perfect for building reading confidence while keeping kids excited about reading all summer long.

Graphic novels encourage imagination, support comprehension, and often introduce complex themes in an accessible way. Whether your child is an avid reader or just discovering a love of books, graphic novels can be a wonderful addition to their summer reading stack.

Have a favorite graphic novel? Please share it in the comments - we're always looking for new recommendations!

As we wrap up our end-of-year graffiti art project, we're reflecting on the powerful stories and ideas that inspired our work.

Together, we read Banksy Graffitied Walls and Wasn't Sorry and learned about Banksy's artwork that famously self-destructed moments after being sold at auction. Students explored Banksy's belief that art can be for everyone—not just the wealthy or elite—and that it can be used to share ideas, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and inspire change.

This project reminded us that art is more than something we make—it can be a voice, a question, a celebration, or a call to action.

A meaningful way to end a year filled with creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression. 🎨✨

Maybe Something Beautiful and Radiant Child have sparked wonderful conversations in our classroom about how art can transform, heal, and inspire. 🎨✨

The stories remind us that creativity can give voice to our hopes, our experiences, and our dreams for a better future. As our graffiti project continues, the children are discovering that art is more than something we make—it is a way to connect, express ourselves, and create positive change, one layer and one story at a time.
