Some history to share about our beloved SS Andrew-Thomas Catholic School. So much love and dedication. ♥️✝️
This is an enhanced postcard image depicting St. Andrew Catholic School in Tennyson, WI. The school dates back to 1847, just a year after Father Andrew Tusch founded the parish of St. Andrew Catholic Church. After serving as a grade school for 75 years, the idea of a Catholic high school originated with Father Joseph Scheffer, the pastor at St. Andrew Church at that time. The Catholic Herald website states the high school began in September, 1922, enrolling 17 students, with Father Scheffer and Sr. M. Hortense of Holy Family Convent as the teachers. Two additional nuns joined the staff in 1924, when the recorded enrollment included 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 6 sophomores, and 12 freshmen. The first high school graduation was in June, 1925, with the last high school graduation in May, 1962, after which the high school closed. On a personal note, that’s the school my mother attended, except for a couple years at British Hollow School. I also attended St. Andrew School as a 3rd grader in the fall of 1964, then we relocated to the new SS Andrew-Thomas school, which opened for students on Monday, January 4th, 1965. If memory serves, my 3rd grade classroom at St. Andrew’s was on the 2nd floor by the gym, taught by Mrs. Haverland. Razed shortly after the move to the new school, St. Andrew Catholic School certainly served the parishes and communities very well for many, many years. Submitted by Dennis & Kathy Schumacher
