German International School Washington D.C. The German International School Washington D.C. The school has a challenging German curriculum mixed with some American elements.

provides students with a unique international perspective by combining the best of German and American educational concepts. is a private, co-educational institution with more than 500 students in preschool through 12th grade, set on a quiet campus in Potomac, Md. Representing more than 20 different nationalities, our student body is truly international, united by a shared interest in German langu

age and culture. The only full-time German day school in Washington, we offer rigorous academics in a warm, multicultural setting. Graduates receive the globally recognized German International Abitur (DIA) as well as a high-school diploma from the state of Maryland. We have two academic focus areas: foreign languages and science. Students gain fluency in at least two languages and achieve mastery of biology, chemistry, and physics. Our teachers prize critical inquiry, teaching students how—not what—to think. On graduation, they are prepared to enter any prestigious university worldwide. The German International School is accredited by the German Ministry of Education and Maryland Department of Education. Our German curriculum is based on that used in the state of Thuringia, known for its high academic standards.

What a joyful first day for our new first-graders! We celebrated the special occasion with the traditional German ‘Schultüten’ which are large cones filled with school supplies and/or treats.

Our first-grade teachers Frau Hallex and Frau Straub are just as excited as their students and are looking forward to an amazing year of learning together!

A big thank-you to our second-graders who put on a fabulous performance to kick off the year before everyone headed off to their classrooms.

Of course, no first day would be complete without a visit from our very own Griffin!

It’s a great way to start first grade! ✨

A special alumni moment! It was wonderful to welcome back recent graduate Mira Molitor (Class of 2026) before she heads to Germany for her next adventure. She visited GISW to say her goodbyes to her favorite teachers and to our Director of Guidance Frau Klara Fabina, a GISW alumna herself from the Class of 1992.

Mira will spend the coming year completing a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ) as a school administrative assistant in Germany, leading her own English board games club, helping with homework supervision, and more.

After her FSJ year, Mira plans to pursue university studies in Biology and/or Chemistry a fitting next step after her time at GISW, where STEM and World Languages are at the heart of what we do. 🌎🔬

We’re so happy for you, Mira, and can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes you! ❤️💛💙

Our 5th graders had a fantastic time exploring their new school building today! From meeting the counselor and librarian to discovering the science building, soccer field, beach volleyball court, playground, health room, and more, there was plenty to see and explore.

A big thank-you to our wonderful 7th and 8th graders, who guided the 5th graders around campus and helped them solve the questions and challenges along the way. What a fun way to get familiar with a new environment and start the school year with a little adventure! 🎉

Welcome to the big building, 5th grade!

It was fantastic to see so many new and returning families on campus and to kick off the new school year together. Welcome Night is a great opportunity to meet your homeroom teacher, reconnect with friends, and get familiar with the classroom and school surroundings before the first day.

We hope the evening helped everyone feel ready for the exciting school year ahead! 🎉📚

A new school year begins this week and brings new faces, new connections, and new beginnings.
We are pleased to welcome over 70 new students to GISW this year.

The international assignment landscape has shifted, and many transatlantic organizations and institutions are experiencing a slower pace of international mobility than in previous years. This shift has naturally meant fewer families relocating to the U.S. through international assignments.

At the same time, we are fortunate to be in Washington, D.C., where governments from around the world continue to send diplomats and professionals to embassies and international institutions. This gives us a unique advantage compared with many other parts of the U.S. and allows GISW to remain closely connected to a vibrant international community.

Welcome to our new students and families from the U.S. and all other countries around the globe. We are so glad you are here and invite you and our returning families to our Welcome Night this Wednesday, August 19th from 5 to 7pm.

Join our GISW community for the 2026/27 school year! There are still open spots!

At GISW, we provide a nurturing bilingual learning environment where students grow from 2-year old preschoolers into dual diploma high school graduates. With a strong academic foundation and a welcoming community, our students thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

While many classes are full, a few spots remain at the Preschool. We encourage you to apply soon!

Families can also apply for financial aid. Follow the link in bio to learn more about how we can support your child’s education.

A warm welcome to our GISW community! We look forward to welcoming all new and returning families to our annual Welcome Night on Wednesday, August 19, from 5:00–7:00 pm in the main building.
This special evening is an important milestone for our newest Griffins, giving students the opportunity to meet their homeroom teacher, get to know a few classmates, and begin feeling at home before the first day of school.
For returning families, it is a wonderful chance to reconnect with friends and to share with incoming families helpful insights about the school, the area, and settling into life at GISW.
Let’s get together and celebrate the start of another exciting school year!..
