The United Korean School of Greater Washington Maryland Campus Korean Language School

The United Korean School of Greater Washington (MD Campus) was founded on June 6, 1970 when a $10,000 grant from the South Korean National Government was bestowed upon the late Dr. Ho Gil Kim and Seung Ik Kang, Minister Counselor of Education. Their goal was to provide an education of the Korean language and culture to students so that they may serve in society as well-rounded citizens. Fifty-one

years later, the foundation of which the school was built upon still rings true as we have now expanded our branches of teaching to adults and also to anyone in the community who is interested in Korean culture. We remain as one of the oldest Korean schools in the country and have received numerous awards and recognition in both Korean and American communities. 워싱턴 통합한국학교(MD 캠퍼스)는 1970년 6월 20 토요일 고 김호길 박사와워싱턴에 파견된 강성익 교육관님이 뜻을 같이하여 정부로부터 1만불의 지원금을 받아 세워졌다. 초대 교장으로 강성익 교육관님을 모시고 개교 후 현재까지 51년이라는 전통을 이어오고 있다. 본교는 한국인 후세들에게 한국의 언어, 문화교육을 통하여 자긍심과 올바는 정체성을 갖게 함으로써, 미국 및 인류사회에 이바지 할 수 있는 사람이 될 수 있도록 한다는 교육목표를 갖고 있다. 본교의 모든 교사들은 학생들 앞에서 부끄럽지 않는 선생님으로 떳떳이 설 수 있고자 사명감을 갖고 혼신을 다하고 있다. 매주 토요일 9시 15분 아침조회를 시작으로 하여 12시 30분까지 한국어 말하기, 듣기, 읽기, 쓰기를 비롯하여 한국역사와 문화에 대해서도 공부하고 있다.

We recently held an inspiring seminar with Professor Michael Soh (UMBC) about parenting in the age of Artificial Intelligence. The key takeaway?
Professor Suh shared 3 essential mindsets for the future:
* Curiosity over Convenience: Use AI as a partner to explore deeper, not just to find quick answers.
* Process over Product: Value the "messy first draft" where real thinking happens, rather than a perfect AI-generated essay.
* Agency over Assistance: Treat AI as a "sparring partner," keeping the child in the driver's seat of their own learning.

Let’s focus on the 'Quality of Reasoning' rather than just 'Correct Outputs.' Together, we can help our children become thinkers, not just producers.

Last week, the Apple Class got a head start on Parent's Day (May 8th)!

Last week, our students competed in the Korean poem recital, storytelling, and sentence-of-the-day competitions. Today, we are so incredibly proud to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and amazing talent of our students! While we celebrated those who took home awards today, we want to give a massive shout-out to every single student who participated. We are so proud of our students who participated in this week’s Speech Contest! The halls were filled with brave voices, beautiful expressions, and a whole lot of Korean language talent.

Our students competed in several categories, showing off their hard work and dedication:

Reciting the "Sentence of the Day": Our younger learners nailed their pronunciation!
Poem Recitation: A wonderful display of rhythm and emotion.
Korean Storytelling (동화구연): Bringing classic tales to life with amazing energy.
"My Dream" Speeches: We loved hearing about everyone’s bright futures and big goals.

Every single participant did their absolute best. Watching our students grow in their fluency and stage presence is the highlight of our week!

This week at our Korean School, we are proud to commemorate the March 1st Korean Independence Movement (Samiljeol).
Historically, brave freedom fighters wrote their earnest wishes for independence and signed their names directly onto the flag before going into battle. Looking at those historical signatures, you can truly feel their desperate longing for a free Korea.

To honor their memory, the Apple Class students created their very own special Taegukki! Just like the heroes of the past, our students wrote down their own bright wishes and proudly signed their names on the flag.

It was a beautiful way for our younger generation to connect with their heritage and keep the spirit of those brave individuals alive!

This week, our classrooms were buzzing with energy as the Sky Class and Maroon Class came together for a special afternoon of Korean traditional games! It was a joy to see the students connecting through friendly competition, especially as they cheered each other on during high-stakes rounds of Yut Nori and practiced their focus tossing arrows for Tuho. These games were not only a break from the books but also provided a wonderful way for the two classes to bond! We are so proud of the sportsmanship and enthusiasm everyone showed!
