What if the words teachers use before a learning task can shape how creatively students think?

In this episode, Glenn Whitman talks with longtime St. Andrew’s educator Chuck James about his article, “Words That Matter: The Effect of Verbal Priming on Creativity.”

Chuck shares how classroom language can prime students’ brains for originality, creativity, and deeper problem-solving. He also explores the difference between assigning a project and designing a real problem for students to solve.

A few research-informed ideas from the conversation:
🔹 Students may need explicit permission to be creative
🔹 Creativity depends on knowledge, skill, and motivation
🔹 “Know it to use it” is a powerful frame for learning
🔹 A beautiful project is not the same as authentic problem-solving
