A. Doula. Is. More. Than. A. Hip. Squeezer.

I know I’ve said it once but I’ll say it a million times. Your midwife cannot be your doula and your doula can’t be your midwife. Everyone can do hip squeezes and labor sit.

In a moment where your midwife is busy taking care of the medical things and your husband is across the room looking white as a sheet and your MIL is panicking…that’s when a doula will rise and remind everyone in the room to take a breath and center the birthing persons needs.

Look, I’m not saying everyone is going to need that…but you don’t know till it happens.

My personal top reasons for hiring a doula has nothing to do with the hip squeezes. I’d hire one in case:
🔥 hospital transfer (my home-birth midwife does not know the hospital the way doulas do or how to advocate at them or how to move me into optimal positions with an epidural)
🔥 To communicate my wishes to my midwives if they get caught up in their midwifery 😂
🔥 To hold my team accountable to what they said they would do
🔥 To help my spouse to support me
🔥 To know that someone had my back without any conflict of interest (licensing litigation)
