What an incredible week at the International Conference on Multilingual Practice in Speech-Language Pathology in Costa Rica! 🇨🇷

Over the course of five days, speech-language pathologists, graduate students, university faculty, and guests came together to complete 20 hours of professional development (2.0 ASHA CEUs) focused on multilingual assessment, speech sound disorders, dynamic assessment, referrals, re-evaluations, literacy-based intervention, and culturally responsive clinical practice.

Beyond the classroom, participants experienced Costa Rica through cultural immersion, meaningful conversations, and unforgettable adventures—from exploring the Tárcoles River and learning about community health perspectives to zip lining, horseback riding, and celebrating together during our beachfront farewell dinner.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this year’s conference such a meaningful experience. We hope you leave with new clinical knowledge, lasting professional connections, and memories that will stay with you long after returning home.

The final day of the International Conference on Multilingual Practice in Speech-Language Pathology focused on literacy-based and curriculum-based intervention for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

Participants explored practical strategies that connect speech-language therapy to classroom learning while supporting language, literacy, and academic success. The sessions emphasized intervention approaches that can be applied directly in schools and clinical settings.

The week concluded with a beachfront BBQ featuring Costa Rican food, music, dancing, and time to celebrate the friendships, professional connections, and new perspectives gained throughout the conference.

Day four of the International Conference on Multilingual Practice in Speech-Language Pathology began with movement and mindfulness through a morning yoga session.

Participants then focused on Perfecting Referrals and Mastering Re-Evaluations, exploring practical strategies for making informed, efficient, and culturally responsive decisions for multilingual students.

The afternoon was dedicated to experiencing Costa Rica beyond the classroom. Participants took advantage of their free time with activities such as zip lining, exploring the area, and enjoying the natural beauty of Jacó.

Day three of the International Conference on Multilingual Practice in Speech-Language Pathology focused on culturally responsive language assessment. 🌴🐴🐊

Participants explored the difference between a language difference and a language disorder, followed by practical strategies for dynamic assessment and evaluating children who speak a language unfamiliar to the clinician. These sessions emphasized reducing linguistic bias and making more informed diagnostic decisions when supporting multilingual learners.

In the afternoon, the group traveled to the Tárcoles River for a guided boat safari and the opportunity to experience Costa Rica’s incredible wildlife and natural environment.

Day 2 done! Today’s sessions focused on speech development in multilingual learners and the clinical decision-making process involved in distinguishing communication differences from communication disorders.

Participants explored Difference or Disorder: Speech, followed by Success with Speech Sound Disorders, where they discussed evidence-based assessment and intervention strategies for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

The afternoon focused on community health access and disability perspectives in Costa Rica, providing participants with a broader understanding of how culture, healthcare systems, and community resources influence service delivery for individuals with communication disorders.

By combining classroom learning with local perspectives, participants gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of culturally responsive clinical practice.

Day 1 completed! The International Conference on Multilingual Practice in Speech-Language Pathology officially began in Costa Rica as speech-language pathologists, graduate students, university faculty, and guests gathered for a week of professional development and cultural immersion. 🇨🇷

The conference opened with a welcome dinner and keynote presentation by Dr. Ruben Flores Campos, M.D., Ph.D., who introduced participants to the cultural foundations of care in Costa Rica. His presentation highlighted the relationship between culture, healthcare, and community while providing valuable context for the week’s discussions on culturally and linguistically responsive practice.

Throughout the week, participants will complete 20 hours of professional development while collaborating with colleagues from around the world and exploring evidence-based approaches to multilingual speech-language pathology.

Follow along this week as we host our 5th annual conference on Multilingual Practice in SLP with Bilinguistics - SLP Impact! This will be an incredible week in Costa Rica filled with learning opportunities, making new friends and colleagues, and exploring this beautiful country.
