We are so proud to share this story, featured in the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation's 2025 Annual Report.

A Foundation grant is supporting a partnership between Great Bay Community College and the housing authorities in Portsmouth, Dover, and Rochester to help residents learn about, enroll in, and complete college degrees. For students with very limited economic resources, the barriers to college can be as tangible as an overdue electric bill or the cost of a nursing uniform. Great Bay College Navigator Kate Haley Webb, Academic Counselor Mike Hart, and Student Support Coordinator Julie Dockery work alongside students every step of the way.

One student in the program, referred to only as Z, lives in public housing with her three-year-old son. She has earned A's in nearly every class, is enrolled in the nursing program, and plans to continue on to her Ph.D. to become a nurse anesthetist.

"I want to prove that those of us who were wards of the state can pursue something and do something in their lives," Z said.

Some 20 students from public housing are now part of the program, with an 84 percent pass rate last semester. Thank you to the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation for making this partnership possible.
