Wow, Patriot Pride is alive and well. That was another really beautiful night of Portsmouth High School community and spirit. So many special moments of heartfelt (and hilarious) stories that were shared from athletes, coaches, and boosters that spanned the full 60 years of Portsmouth High School existence. Congratulations to all our inductees and thank you to everyone that came out to support! See you in 2026!

Long before turf fields and modern tracks, Jim Burton was making history on the dirt and grass of Portsmouth High. A true hometown standout, Jim helped lead the Patriots to their first-ever state championship in 1978, scoring the game-winning goal!
On the track, Jim’s dedication and determination made him one of Rhode Island’s best. He set a school record in the 800m, 1:55.8, that stood for more than four decades, and his leadership helped build the proud track tradition that continues at PHS today.
After graduation, Jim continued to make Portsmouth proud at URI, where he helped set school and New England records and earned All-New England honors.
Join us this Saturday, October 11, as we celebrate Jim and our newest inductees into the Portsmouth Athletic Hall of Fame — honoring the athletes and memories that have shaped our community.

Mike Lunney, Portsmouth HS Athletic Director from 1995 to 2011, will be inducted into the PHS Athletic Hall of Fame this Saturday. In addition to managing the athletic department, he was the boys basketball coach for 8 seasons, leading his teams to multiple division titles, league championships, and sportsmanship awards. His peers voted him as Coach of the Year on three occasions, and twice he was honored with the Athletic Director State Award of Merit. He now serves as the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. Mr. Lunney's office door was always open and he was always happy to converse with students about school, sports, family, and just to check in with kids. The contributions he made to our PHS community were invaluable and we were so fortunate to have him at the helm for 16 years. We are very excited to recognize all his success at the induction ceremony this Saturday. Tickets are still available at www.portsmouthathletichof.com

Kathy Ayars Conlon, class of 1986, was a truly gifted athlete and a leader on and off the fields at PHS. She participated in many sports including track, tennis, basketball, and softball, but her specialty was on the soccer pitch. She earned All division, All State, and All New England honors and was voted team MVP her sophomore, Junior, and senior years. One of the most rewarding aspects of this hall of fame is seeing such outstanding Portsmouth Alums recognized for all their accomplishments, and celebrated for starting the tradition of excellence that our current student athletes continue on today. Join us next Saturday for the 2025 induction ceremony! www.Portsmouthathletichof.com

Ryan Westmoreland, class of 2008, is one of the most storied and special student athletes to come out of Portsmouth High School! He earned First Team All-Division and All-State honors in soccer and basketball, yet his talent on the baseball diamond was nothing short of extraordinary. Twice named the Gatorade Player of the Year, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox right out of high school. He gives back to the game he loves now as a coach at Umass-Dartmouth and through programs like NE Baseball and Ocean State Makos. What a talented and upstanding young man, a hero of many PHS athletes that have followed in his footsteps. We are so excited to celebrate with Ryan for all his incredible feats! Join us at the hall of fame ceremony on October 11!

Katherine Murphy Snyder, class of 2006, was a very special student athlete. Her soccer achievements alone put her in elite class, Girls Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year - Offensive MVP as a sophomore and several seasons of First team all state honors. She coupled the soccer talent with an outstanding ability in Golf. She was the individual state champion her junior and senior year, and capped off her high school career with the RI and Ocean State women's amateur titles. She went on to play at Penn State University as a member of their Golf team. Hope you will join us on October 11 to celebrate Katherine and all our 2025 honorees! Tickets at portsmouthathletichof.com

Henry "Skip" Winter, class of 1969, will be inducted into the PHS Athletic Hall of Fame next month. Skip joins some of his teammates from the very early years of Portsmouth High School into the hall, and rightly so. He was a stand out athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He played an integral part in securing the school's first football team championship in the 1968 season. He then continued his career after PHS, playing football at the US Naval Academy! We are so happy to see Skip and his family join us for the celebration. Tickets at portsmouthathletichof.com.
