Last school year, our Reading Enrichment Program worked with more than 125 students across four of Portsmouth's elementary schools. 83% of the students we assessed showed improvement in their ability to decode words they didn't know — and in some schools, kids gained as much as 10% on their reading SOL scores.

Those numbers are kids sounding out words that used to stop them cold. That's what phonics-based, one-on-one and small-group support can do in a single school year.

This year, REP is expanding to 7 schools. We can't do that without more volunteers on our team. Ready to join us?

Why A Legacy of Hope?

Breast cancer touches more than the person who receives the diagnosis.
It touches families, caregivers, friends, and entire communities.

On October 24, we're creating a space to:
Learn more about breast health and early detection.
Celebrate survivors and hear their stories.
Encourage those currently facing breast cancer.
Remember loved ones we've lost.

Connect families with healthcare and community resources.

You don't have to be a breast cancer survivor to attend.

Reading doesn't start on the first day of kindergarten. Our Early Literacy Initiative supports kids from birth all the way through sixth grade, because the earlier a child falls in love with books, the easier that love is to keep.

For babies and toddlers, that means books in the home through DPIL. For school-age kids who need more direct help connecting sounds to letters, that means REP's phonics-based tutoring.

You can be part of either stage. Donate to help us mail books and fund reading support, or share this post with someone who'd want to get involved. Every dollar and every share moves a Portsmouth child closer to reading with confidence.

Go to volunteercb.org to get started.

“Phonics makes the difference.”

It's more than a phrase we use around here — it's the approach behind everything we do in the Reading Enrichment Program.

Phonics teaches children how letters and letter combinations represent sounds, so they can sound out an unfamiliar word instead of guessing from a picture or memorizing it whole. The National Reading Panel found phonics instruction benefits children from kindergarten through sixth grade, including kids who are struggling to read.

Pastor Frances teaches it this way: “Letters make sounds. Sounds make words…” And once a child can put that together, they can read almost anything.

Did you know? In a study of more than 86,000 caregivers, children enrolled in an Imagination Library program were nine times more likely to read at least four days a week than children who hadn't yet received books. That's what free books in the home can do — not just give a child something to read, but change how often reading happens at all.

As Portsmouth's Local Program Partner for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, we've mailed free books to more than 1,100 children under five in our community. Every one of those books is a chance for a family to build a reading habit together.

Know a Portsmouth family with a child under five? Send them our way — we'd love to get them enrolled.

💙💛 Building opportunity. Strengthening our community.

Strong communities are built by people who show up. During October’s Economic & Community Development Month, the Rotary Club of Churchland celebrates the local partnerships that help us serve our neighbors.

Working alongside Oasis Social Ministry and ChainBreakers, Inc., our members help provide meals for people in our community. A meal meets an immediate need. Through each act of service, we also remind our neighbors that they matter.

Thank you to both organizations for welcoming us and for your continued commitment to our community. Every volunteer’s time and effort are appreciated. Together, we can reach more people.

You have something to give. Rotary gives you a place to put it into action.

Join us at a meeting and discover how your time can make a difference through the Rotary Club of Churchland. There is room for you here!
