THE RESULTS ARE IN — and Portsmouth’s children are WINNING!

During the 2025–26 school year, ChainBreakers served 125 students across four Portsmouth elementary schools through our Reading Enrichment Program.

And the results speak loudly: nearly 100% of the striving readers we assessed improved their ability to decode unfamiliar words. That means children are gaining one of the foundational skills they need to become stronger, more confident readers.

Our impact keeps growing beyond the classroom, too. Since September, our volunteers have contributed 850+ hours to our literacy and food security programs, and we are on track to enroll 1,000 Portsmouth children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library before the end of 2026.

We’re proud of the numbers. We’re even more excited about what those numbers represent — children discovering that they can read, families gaining resources, and a community showing up for its youngest learners.

Here’s a fact worth sitting with: reading below grade level in elementary school is one of the clearest predictors of dropping out down the road. It’s also one of the most fixable, with the right support early.

That’s exactly the work Reading Facilitators help us do. It’s a real commitment, and it makes a real difference.

What a great day in Portsmouth!

The ChainBreakers team was excited to join Mercy Chef’s 2nd Annual Back-to-School Block Party in Olde Towne Portsmouth last week -- a day packed with food, fun, resources, and plenty of community love.

At our table, we gave away books and toys, connected with families, and helped parents enroll their little ones in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Portsmouth.

We love showing up where Portsmouth families are -- especially when it means helping put more books into the hands and homes of our youngest readers.

A big thank you to Mercy Chefs for bringing so many organizations together to help families head into the new school year supported and ready.

Portsmouth showed up! And we were glad to be part of it.
