Natural Learning Lab

Natural Learning Lab No longer a home daycare. Rhanna is originally from Brazil and has been working with children in America since 2014.

Natural Learning Lab is a Home Daycare established in June 2020 by Rhanna Thompson, a mother and educator who cares deeply and understands the importance and value of a deliberately focused childhood education. Rhanna completed three certificates (40 credits ) toward her Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Development at Northern Virginia Community College, worked as a Preschool teacher (2018-20

19), and as a nanny (2014-2018). Rhanna designed Natural learning Lab specifically to focus on a child lead learning experience where nature and the classroom act as co-teachers, intriguing, and stimulating children’s curiosity, and where learning is a consequence of play.

Leaves Collage 🍁
Back to one of our favorite fall activities:
the leaves collage!
So simple and so pretty! Our friends got to collect some leaves and then play with the stickiness of the contact paper. ❤️
It turned out very pretty and it is still hanging on our main door.
It’s hard to believe that fall is almost over. 🍁
What is favorite season?

✔️Using colorful bracelets to creat different shapes on wooden plate rack OR use bracelets on rack as a Dino trampoline; 🤷🏽‍♀️
✔️Pretend play turning the toy cash register into a computer and the market stand into a desk;
✔️Parallel play with trucks and books and dinosaurs. 🚗 📚 🦖
❤️“Play builds the kind of free-and-easy, try-it-out, do-it-yourself character that our future needs.” ~ James L. Hymes, Jr.
Don’t forget to have fun!

Fall Discussion and Exploration 🍁 🍎
Back in the first week of fall we had some fun talking about apples and leaves:
🍂 We tried to balance apples on paper tubes;
🍂We talked about different colors and textures of leaves;
🍂We crunched leaves with our hands;
🍂we tried to fit apples into different containers and tubes;
There are just so many things to learn and explore in this amazing season! 🍁

Here is a quick tip for you: have any empty seasoning containers laying around?🧂
Before trashing, consider letting your little ones play with them!
This is such a great opportunity to put their curios mind to work and improve problem solving and motor skills!
Give it a try!

Pumpkin Painting 🎃
This week we are reading “It’s pumpkin day, mouse!” by and and this painting activity fits right in with the book!
They got to paint their own pumpkins just like
Mouse and Dog do in the story, plus the book gives us a great opportunity to talk about feelings and how we express them! 😊 😢 😦
📝 Tip: I created the props on last picture with cardboard paper, paint and markers so they get to play with the faces while we read our book during circle time!

Sensory Table Activity
Dyed rice for the win! 🍚
This week we used colorful rice to play with the fall colors and our farm animals. They loved playing with rice, finding the animals in the sensory tub, throwing rice up in the air and watching the colors mix as they played!
We will definitely be using this colorful rice idea again!
Have you tried this before?

Matching activity: Farm animals edition 🐮
To remember and reinforce the animals’ names and sounds we are using pictures and figurines to match!
They pick a figurine of one of the animals and then try to find the same animal on the board.
Meanwhile you can ask them to find a specific animal, make its sound and have them repeat while they look for it.
It’s easy and fun, give it a try and help them expand their vocabulary!

Still on the farm animals 🐴
Last week we started exploring the farm animals and here is another fun activity we worked on:
🧽 Giving our animals a bath in our water table! 🛁
This way they get to play with water and work on recognizing the animals and their names and sounds.
We had lots of fun and had the water table out throughout the week so our fun was extended by also:
💧 pouring water with the measuring cups;
🐎 comparing their sizes;
🎣 using the cups to “fish” the animals out of the water...
♾ so many ways to learn by playing!
