Say it isn't so - this is the last post for Sam's summer reading! Orientation starts next week, and classes start the week after that. Here's how Sam's rounding out her summer:

I cheated a little by picking the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin. While my goal was to read new books this summer, I've read this series more times than I can count. (In my defense, I was on vacation and I wanted something I knew I'd enjoy!) The Broken Earth Trilogy is set in a world where some people can cause or quell earthquakes, and for that they are brutally oppressed. This series has some of the best worldbuilding, characters, and storytelling that I've ever read, to the point where I've given away multiple copies of the first book just to get my friends into the series. If you're going to try anything new this year, try this series!

Today is August 4, 2026.

Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles is a series of short stories published in 1950, detailing Earth's colonization of Mars, the extinction of the indigenous Martians, and the nuclear war that devastates the Earth. The story "There Will Come Soft Rains" takes place on August 4, 2026, and tells the tale of a day in the life of a technologically advanced automated house, caring for a family that is no longer there.

The Storyteller is a TV show created by Jim Henson. Each episode tells a different European folk tale with a mix of live actors and puppets. You can find this show by visiting https://www.greatbay.edu/academics/library/streaming-videos/ and logging in to Kanopy using your CCSNH credentials!

Today's collection spotlight is Grendel by John Gardner, a retelling of Beowulf from the perspective of the monster haunting the hall of Heorot. It's part of Sam's summer reading, and here's what she has to say:

I have a soft spot for stories from the monster's perspective. I thought this would be a natural fit, but I did not finish it! I wanted to share this book because I don't often see people talking about books they didn't finish in a positive light. I can tell there's a great deal of merit in Grendel for the right person. It is steeped in philosophy, and overtly philosophical fiction has never been to my taste. Gardner has a deep respect for the original text that I appreciate.

You can find Grendel on display at the front of the Library for the rest of the summer. It wasn't the book for me, but it might be the book for you!

Continuing with Sam's reading challenge, here is here next pick: Real Q***r America: LGBT Stories from Red States by Samantha Allen. Here's Sam's thoughts:

I couldn't let Pride Month slip by without reading a q***r narrative! I was drawn to this book because it spoke to a question I've been asked before: why stay in a state that pushes legislation against the LGBTQ community? This book answers that question: because it's home, and if every q***r person with the means to move fled the state, then who would be there to fight for the people who couldn't leave? I really love the way this book uncovers how pockets of q***r community and joy can thrive in oppressive conditions. My only true grievance is that the citations in this book are formatted horribly!
