Next week, we’ll welcome Debra Curtis back to Cory’s Lane! ✨

Debra and her family spent nearly a decade as part of our community while daughters Zoe ’12 and Emma ’12 attended Saint Philomena School. Though their years as a current Saint Philomena family eventually came to a close, Debra’s connection to Cory’s Lane certainly did not. ❤️ Believe it or not, our beloved school made many appearances in Debra’s debut novel, Laws of Love & Logic.

Next Thursday, September 24, join SPS alumni, current parents, faculty and staff, and friends age 21+ for a lively conversation with Debra about her writing journey and the place that inspired parts of her novel. The Class of 2029 started their sixth-grade year with an adventure right in their own backyard! ⚓️ After the short ride to Fort Adams Trust, our sixth graders spent the day working as a team, strengthening friendships, and discovering the historical significance of this 200-year-old fort. Students explored the tunnels beneath America’s most complex fortification and worked together to “defend” the fort with a cannon. 💥

This beautiful day was made even sweeter with time at the beach and visits from two Rhode Island favorites: the Cluck Truck and Del’s! ☀️🍋

Most importantly, this off-campus adventure helped the Class of 2029 begin this new chapter together and build the community that will carry them through their middle school years. We are so grateful to their House leaders, Ms. Hedden and Mr. Quinn, for helping our sixth graders start the year excited and united! 🩵

In less than three weeks, the Saint Philomena community will return to Sakonnet Golf Club for our Annual Golf Outing on September 28! 💚 This year, we’re heading to the course with a sold-out field of foursomes!

These photos capture a few favorite moments from past Golf Outings. The beautiful setting, joyful camaraderie, and friendly competition have made this day such a special SPS tradition over the years. Last month, Benton, Harry, and Sam represented SPS in Houston, Texas! ✈️ These three rising eighth graders joined students from The Regis School of the Sacred Heart and Berchmans Academy for a Sacred Heart Schools Network HEART Project rooted in service, learning, and community. ❤️

All the students explored the very real issue of childhood poverty in Houston. They visited two local organizations — Kids Meals Inc. and Books Between Kids — where they learned about how their efforts directly impact children in need in the Space City. 🍽️📚 Throughout the experience, students were invited to live simply and intentionally: sleeping on classroom floors, sharing common spaces, preparing meals together, listening to speakers, reading and reflecting, and taking part in meaningful hands-on service. They also had plenty of fun — and even went to a Houston Astros game! ⚾

These HEART Projects offer students from across the Network of Sacred Heart Schools an opportunity to come together through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching and the Sacred Heart Way. We are so proud of how these young men represented our school community with open hearts, curious minds, and a willingness to serve. Many thanks to Mrs. Swan for shepherding Benton, Harry, and Sam through this experience. 💌 This is the Sacred Heart mission in action — extending far beyond Cory’s Lane!

As we prepare to welcome students and families back to Cory’s Lane, we wanted to share a few extra highlights from the 2025-2026 school year! ✨

This June, four of our own represented SPS at the National History Day competition. With Ms. Hedden's support and guidance, these young women brought their talents to the University of Maryland. 🇺🇸 To earn their ticket to the national competition, they first competed in the Rhode Island History Day Competition in Warwick this spring.

Ani, Ava, and Reagan, now Saint Philomena graduates, created a performance called The Atomic Energy Commission: Spreading the Use of Nuclear Power. With their superb local production, these three took their show on the road. ⚛️ Together, they were selected as the outstanding entry from all junior Rhode Island entries at the national competition!

Cora, a rising eighth grader, found inspiration for her project close to home. 🌊 Her paper, titled On Our Own Shores: The Battle of Point Judith, merited a spot at the national competition. She also won three special awards at the Rhode Island competition: The Fort Adams Trust Award, the National Maritime Historical Society Award, and the Naval Order of the United States Award. Back on campus, Cora received the Fort Adams Trust Award from Paul Marshall, Executive Director of the Fort Adams Trust and a member of the SPS Class of 2003.

We are so proud of Ani, Ava, Cora, and Reagan! 👏 We can’t wait to see what our middle school students create this year! ❤️

Last Friday, Madagascar: A Musical Adventure Kids made its Aquidneck Island debut on the Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart stage! 🦁🦓🦒🐘

We were absolutely amazed as 28 campers brought a 35-minute musical to life after just two weeks of rehearsals. 🎭 While this was the first time our summer camp program has taken on a musical production, we have a feeling it won’t be the last.

The production was made even more special by the incredible leadership of our junior counselors — current middle school students and dedicated SPS alumni — who served as wonderful role models throughout the experience. A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr. Spaner and Miss Spaner, whose vision and enthusiasm turned this dream into a reality! 🧡

These young performers grew in courage and confidence, embraced new challenges, and discovered the joy of working together toward a common goal. After two outstanding performances, they reminded us all that with teamwork, commitment, and a little creativity, something truly extraordinary can happen… even in just two weeks. ✨👏

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸

Before we headed off for summer break, our Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart community gathered to celebrate Flag Day and our nation's 250th birthday. Red, white, and blue attire filled Cory's Lane with patriotic spirit, as we paused to give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy.

As we look back on that beautiful June afternoon, we are reminded that these moments help our students grow as grateful citizens. Here's to the next generation who will help write America’s future! ❤️🤍💙

After Mass, Bishop Bruce Lewandowski toured our beautiful campus and took time to visit each corner of Cory’s Lane. 🗺️ Starting with our youngest learners and ending with our soon-to-be graduates, everyone shared their daily routines at Saint Philomena School of the Sacred Heart.

Bishop Bruce delighted the children with stories, laughter, and words of encouragement. He also offered his blessing to everyone he encountered. Ever the ice cream enthusiast, Bishop Bruce spotted a few posters around campus featuring his favorite treat! 🍦 His joyful presence was such a gift to our community. We look forward to welcoming him back again soon! ❤️
