STARBASE Victory

STARBASE Victory is an innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. We often hear, “This can’t be school. WHAT’S OUR SECRET?

STARBASE VICTORY currently serves all 4th, 5th and 6th grade students in the Portsmouth Public School system. Our students come aboard for a four day hands-on, with minds engaged for math and science learning experiences. It’s too much fun!” Every student wears a new T-shirt “uniform” and selects their own call-sign to use during their time at STARBASE, allowing each student to become “special”. P

ROGRAM COMPONENTS
Fourth graders learn spatial relationships, mapping and geospatial concepts. They receive a compass to take home. Fifth graders learn about climate, weather and the local watershed. Then they make their own video about their experiences. Sixth graders learn elementary physics of air and flight. They use a computer flight simulator and build their own rocket…launching it at graduation! All classes conduct experiments and activities aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning. Students see how mathematics and science is used in the “real world” and how those subjects fit into their lives. Self esteem, goal setting and the importance of teamwork are crucial lessons woven into the curriculum. An exciting, volunteer summer program is offered for each of the grade levels. Actually doing things with their hands and minds allows STARBASE students to retain the lessons and appreciate science at work. The Partnership
The STARBASE concept is a unique partnership between the Portsmouth Public School system, the community and a non-profit corporation called STARBASE Victory, Incorporated. Nine specially equipped classrooms with Promethean Board lessons and a laptop computer available to every student make the STARBASE experience particularly memorable. Eight certified instructors with postgraduate degrees present engaging lessons, and students record their hypotheses and their findings in personal Mission Logs (paperwork is important!). The community (you!) provides the funding. Our non-profit corporation manages the program. We have been serving Portsmouth’s students since the spring of 2001.

The energy was nonstop today at Maritime Mania and Go Tech Camp! 🚤🤖

Maritime Mania teams put their engineering skills to the test by designing and building boats, then launching them into the water to see which creations could sail the best! Meanwhile, Go Tech campers brought the competition indoors, building robots and going head-to-head in thrilling robot soccer battles. From splashes to goals, teamwork, creativity, and friendly competition made for an unforgettable day of STEM fun! 🌊⚽💥

⚓🌊 What an incredible day for Maritime Mania and Go Tech Camp! 🤖

Our campers excitement reached another level when they had the chance to meet the one and only Mayor of Portsmouth, Mr. Shannon Glover! 🎉

Campers also explored the Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC), where learned about the exciting world of maritime careers, innovation, and public safety.

Our campers thought they were watching Iron Man fly through the sky—but it turned out to be a real person soaring in an amazing jet suit! 🤯

Seeing this cutting-edge technology in action reminded our students that the future is here, and with STEM, anything is possible. What an unforgettable day of inspiration and innovation!

Another exciting day at Maritime Mania and Go Tech Camp! 🌊🤖

The energy never slowed down as our campers spent the day immersed in nonstop, hands-on STEM adventures! From tackling thrilling harness challenges and navigating pipe-building activities to touring impressive ships and designing and building their own robots, every moment was packed with discovery, teamwork, and innovation.

It was another unforgettable day of learning, creating, and having fun while inspiring the next generation of engineers, explorers, and problem-solvers!

🚤🤖 Maritime Mania and Go Tech Camp are officially underway! What an incredible first day!

Our campers wasted no time diving into hands-on STEM adventures. Maritime Mania students designed and built their very own boats before heading to City Park to put their creations to the ultimate test on the water. Meanwhile, Go Tech campers got straight to work engineering and programming robots, kicking off an exciting week of innovation, creativity, and problem-solving.

This is just the beginning of an amazing week filled with discovery, teamwork, and unforgettable STEM experiences. Stay tuned—there’s so much more excitement ahead!

🌿🦎 Adventure was calling, and Bay Quest Summer Camp answered! Our campers explored the amazing wonders of nature at the Living Museum!

Bay Quest Summer Camp making waves!🐬🌊

Our Bay Quest campers set sail on an unforgettable Dolphin Boat Tour! 🚤☀️ As they cruised the beautiful waters, they were on the lookout for playful dolphins in their natural habitat while learning about the incredible marine life that calls our local waterways home.

What an amazing day of exploration, science, and memories that will last a lifetime! 🌊💙
