Hello Creekside Community,
Just wanted to write a note in love and appreciation for our beloved teacher, Lisa Dettloff, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
We knew her as an absolutely extraordinary and unprecedented science educator, who created such valuable learning experiences and unparalleled curriculum for our students over six years. In addition, she was a courageous and adventurous soul. She was loved and deeply valued by her students and everyone she came in contact with.
I remember one of her class lessons at Creekside where she decided to bring dance into an investigation about brain activity, spatial awareness, expression and “fight or flight.” She had the students move in their own special way to music with blindfolds on. It was so beautiful to see the students trusting her and moving about the room to the music and responding to her direction.
Dance was also an important part of Lisa’s life and I remember working together to prepare the lesson and she said she had always wanted to merge her work as a scientist with her love of dance and share it with her students.
Lisa recently lost her courageous battle with brain cancer, a diagnosis which ironically surfaced while she was teaching her unit on the Brain, in her last year at Creekside. Her celebration of life was held at the Mill Valley Community Center and the space was chalk full of so many wonderful people and community who loved Lisa and saw her light, just as we did at Creekside.
We will never forget Lisa and we will be forever grateful for having her in our lives to share her vast love for science, environmental consciousness, and vigor for life.
