The first time Jaden Dalrymple '26 shadowed nurses in Maine Medical Center's Medical ICU, her instructor practically had to pry her out of the unit.

Four years earlier, nursing was still just an abstract plan, and she spent most of her time training with a D1 dance team. Now a graduate of USM's School of Nursing, Jaden is back in that same ICU this October, this time as a registered nurse.

A current USM graduate student and a USM alumna — connected through the same faculty lab — now dive the same Casco Bay waters, each chasing one half of the same question. Luc Harrison studies an invasive shrimp. Allison Fogg researches and restores the eelgrass it may threaten.

Together, their work is helping piece together what's happening beneath the surface of Casco Bay.

Former USM Athletic Director Al Bean and Olympic sailor David Hughes '99 are being inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame this Sunday.

Bean spent over three decades at USM, growing the athletics department to 23 varsity sports and nearly 500 student-athletes. Hughes competed for the U.S. in sailing at two Olympic Games. The two first crossed paths here at USM — and now they're back on campus to be honored together.

Eelgrass is one of the most important marine habitats in Southern Maine — and it's disappearing along our coast.

USM alumna Allison Fogg is helping bring it back, working with COBALT's Team Zostera to research and restore these underwater meadows one seed at a time. 🌱 See what it takes to bring an ecosystem back to life.

“Here in Casco Bay, eelgrass is really important for stabilizing the sediment and absorbing wave action. It’s also a big carbon sink, and it’s an amazing nursery habitat for juvenile fish and crustaceans. Big fishing and lobstering industries rely on the animals that grow up in these meadows."
