Portland East Middle School FFA

10/03/2026

A group of Senior Agricultural Education majors from University of Tennessee at Martin stopped by Portland East Middle School to hear words of wisdom from Ms. Bell and agriculture educators in Sumner County. Students got a glimpse into what agricultural education looks like in a middle school classroom.

We’re always excited to welcome future agriculture teachers into the classroom, share a little of our experiences, and hopefully give them a few ideas to take with them as they begin their own teaching journeys!

Portland East is proud to be a place where students and future teachers can learn, grow, and explore the many opportunities in agriculture education.

Today we remember 9/11 🇺🇸
In class we are learning about the animal hero’s during 9/11, the following is an excerpt from today's reading 🐕‍🦺:

"One of the most famous rescue dogs from the 9/11 efforts was Bretagne, a Golden Retriever who, along with her handler Denise Corliss, searched tirelessly for survivors. Bretagne worked long hours, sniffing through rubble to locate victims and provide crucial assistance. Although most searches at Ground Zero turned into recovery missions rather than rescues, the dogs’ work was invaluable. Their presence gave hope to both workers and victims' families, knowing that every possible effort was being made to find loved ones.

The dogs worked in grueling conditions, often suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and exposure to dangerous materials. Yet, they continued to work day after day, driven by their loyalty and training. In addition to their search and rescue tasks, many dogs offered emotional support to the recovery workers themselves, who faced an overwhelming and heartbreaking situation."
