Today, and every day, we lift up and honor Indigenous people and cultures (past and present) native to this land. Indigenous communities continue to face devastating systemic barriers to accessing basic human rights, including health care. American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) women are almost twice as likely to develop cervical cancer, and four times as likely to die from it. AIAN women also have a 7% higher rate of breast cancer and a 10% higher death rate. Both types of cancers are treatable, and cervical cancer is highly preventable, but only when people can access screenings and lifesaving treatments.
