What makes a story impossible to look away from?

Today, Waynflete Middle Schoolers explored that question with James Robinson, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker for The New York Times and author of Whale Eyes.

Drawing on his own experience growing up with a disability, James shared how perspective shapes the stories we tell—and how we tell them. He introduced students to “out-trigue” the moments that make us want to pull away, look elsewhere, or disengage. As a storyteller, he often leans into those moments, leaving space for his audience to ask questions, make connections, and consider new perspectives.

Friday Night Lights was back and better than ever!🌟💚 Fore River Campus was buzzing last week as the Waynflete community came together for an unforgettable night of Flyer spirit. From boys and girls soccer taking on Wells under the lights to a high-energy pep rally, food trucks, face painting, and a sideline packed with cheering fans, the energy was electric from start to finish!

Waynflete alum Maren Cooper ’23, now a senior at Bowdoin College, has received the prestigious Beckman Scholars Award, a national honor supporting 15 months of independent, faculty-mentored scientific research. A biochemistry major, Maren is researching H. pylori and exploring new possibilities for future antibiotic treatments. Congratulations, Maren! 💚

Congratulations to Sam D. '29 for his efforts at the State Championship Golf Qualifier. Sam shot an 84, making the cut and will compete in the Class C State Championship on Saturday, October 10. Good luck, Sam!🏌

Meet Wayne the Fearless Flyer! 💚 Wayne has been seen soaring around Waynflete for a few years now, but we figured it was time for a proper introduction! An adventurous wombat and aviator at heart, Wayne has brought along a love of learning, adventure, and plenty of school spirit.

Wayne’s favorite color? Green, of course. Favorite activities? Flying airplanes, dancing, and handing out plenty of hugs and high-fives. Keep an eye out for Wayne tomorrow night at Friday Night Lights—he’ll be ready to cheer on the Flyers! ⚽️

Last week, Waynflete trustees got an exciting look at the progress taking shape inside our new Wellness and Athletics Center. Since their last construction tour, drywall has gone up, paint is on the walls, and the spaces are beginning to come to life. And with the stairs now in place, this visit required a little less bravery than last spring’s trip up the ladder!

Waynflete came together this morning for our 2026 Convocation, marking the start of another school year as one community. Centered around this year’s theme, “Roots and Rising,” the morning featured reflections from students representing each division, faculty and staff voices, and music from the Jazz Combo, Upper School Chorus, and WIC. With Lower, Middle, and Upper School students gathered together on Waynhenge, Convocation offered a chance to celebrate the connections that ground us while looking ahead to the growth and possibilities of the year to come.

And, as tradition calls for, we closed the morning with the ringing of the gong! 🔔🌱

On Founders Day, we celebrate Waynflete’s beginnings and the generations of students, educators, and families who have shaped our community. 💚

Founded in 1898 by educators Agnes Lowell and Caroline Crisfield, Waynflete began with just 49 students. In 1912, the school moved to the Horace Dudley estate near Portland’s Western Promenade, where a former stable and carriage house became classrooms in what we now know as Founders Hall.

More than a century later, the values that have long shaped a Waynflete education—curiosity, creativity, relationships, intellectual engagement, and community—remain at the heart of who we are. Today, we celebrate where we began, all those who have been part of the journey, and the generations still to come.
